SERVICE BATTALION:
Alberta's Army Reserve, Combat Service Support Unit


Service Battalion (Svc Bn): A unit of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) that provides Combat Service Support (CSS) to a Brigade Group and its elements. It is able to fight in a defensive role as well as provide the vital logístical support to sustain the operations of the other units within the brigade group.

Service battalions are normally subdivided into:


  • battalion headquarters (Bn HQ), concerned with overseeing the effective training and employment of all companies within the battalion. The HQ usually consists of the command staff, an orderly room, an operations cell, and a training cell.
- a
transportation company (Tn Coy), which provides transportation and movements support, both tactical and administrative, to the brigade.
- a
supply company (Sup Coy) which provides general supply support to the brigade.
- a
maintenance company (Maint Coy), which provides automotive, mechanical, electrical, weapon maintenance and support to the brigade.
- an
administration company (Admin Coy), which provides _internal_ service support (signals and communication, transportation, Supply, maintenance, food services, military police support.) to the battalion and its elements.


41 Service Battalion consists of a Bn HQ, combined trades 15 Service Company (Svc Coy) in Edmonton, AB with an operational cell in Red Deer, AB and combined trades 14 Svc Coy in Calgary, AB with operational cells in Medicine Hat & Lethbridge, AB.

A Career with 41 Service Battalion
The Army Reserve generally work
part-timewithin their community. You are not posted to another city or required to do a military relocation. However, you can volunteer to move to another Base. You may also volunteer for deployment on a military mission within or outside Canada. As a Reservist, the choice to go is always voluntary.

We are a
part-time component of the Canadian Army which is trained to augment the Regular Army (full-time) and aid civilian authorities during crisis or emergency situations (floods, ice storms, forest fires).

Meals and accommodations are provided during weekend field training, summer training, deployment training and deployment.

Travel assistance may be available to you depending on how far away from the Armoury you live.

There are education reimbursements available through the Canadian Armed Forces (see link below).

The Logistics Branch and Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Branch have scholarships and bursaries that may be applicable toward your post-secondary education.


Dental coverage (for most items) is 90%, Health Care Premiums are reimbursed and you will contribute toward a Pension which provides financial and health benefits when you retire.

Qualifications
- be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- have completed at least Grade 10 or Secondaire IV (in Quebec)
- have parental consent if under age 1- meet Canadian Armed Forces medical standards
- successfully complete selection process, interview and examinations
- pass physical fitness tests
