The opportunity


As Payroll Manager, you'll join our Finance team, and you will help support the important business enablement functions that keep our organization running strong.

The Payroll Manager will ensure the efficient processing of the semi-monthly and monthly payroll for approximately 7000 salaried and hourly employees across Canada and oversee the related day-to-day payroll operations.

The Payroll Manager prepares month-end reconciliations; and coordinates the processing of all reporting. In addition, this role is critical in the implementation and testing of new/enhanced payroll protocols and systems. The responsibilities of this position are complex and require experience in many facets of payroll operations.


Your key responsibilities

  • Monitor compliance with payroll legislation. Research payroll and taxrelated problems and inquiries.
  • Manage daytoday activities, including supervising 6 payroll staff. Prepare performance and salary reviews for staff.
  • Serve as a payroll technical liaison with internal contacts and functional managers throughout the firm including human resources, legal, finance, and IT
  • Analyse needs to recommend and implement methods to improve efficiency and reduce costs, including testing new systems and procedures when requested.
  • Plan and control payroll projects / new system software through the project life cycle, with the overall goal of process improvement.
  • Configure payroll reports utilizing Dayforce tools; create, modify, and utilize spreadsheets additionally to administer various payroll transactions; conduct payroll analysis as required.
  • Prepare and maintain Payroll process documentation to support training needs and support continuous improvement. Establish and maintain process metrics/reporting
  • Monitor compliance with accounting policies and internal accounting controls.
  • Review vendor's Service Organization Controls (SoC) reports and document performance of keep access and change controls in Payroll
  • Reconcile and sign off on Payroll Liability G/L accounts monthly and make required adjustments
  • Prepare payroll taxable benefits on a quarterly basis for gifts to staff, fitness, professional dues.
  • Prepare and submit all annual returns in a timely manner (T4, T4A's, Releve1, EHT, WCB).
  • Act as a liaison with all Government agencies and assist with internal / external audits including CRA and WCB.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • Greater than 12 years of payroll experience in large professional services environment with at least 5 years managerial experience.
  • Payroll CPM Certificate required.
  • Experience in accounting/reconciliations of payroll liabilities accounts and knowledge of Payroll GL.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Ceridian Dayforce payroll system required
  • Advanced expertise in Excel, other IT tools and protocols
  • Complex payroll knowledge i.e. Global reporting of salaries, expatriates and inbounds.
  • Deal with Government agencies CRA, Service Canada.
  • Source deductions (CPP, EI)
- balancing to report, cheque requisitions, maintain running total to balance to T4.
