Job description


The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for the performance management of the Pharmacy Assistant and the Pharmacy Assistant reports directly to the Pharmacy Manager.

The Pharmacy Assistant also works under the direct supervision of any Pharmacist on duty during the same shift.

The Pharmacy Assistant must work to ensure that all the technical and administrative aspects of prescription dispensing are in accordance with federal and provincial regulations, standards of practice, and store polices to enable the delivery of optimal patient care and customer service.

In addition, it is the responsibility of this position to understand the roles of the other pharmacy team members and contribute to an efficient, safe and productive work environment.


In addition to adhering to the policies for prescription dispensing, patient care and customer service, this position must also abide by all other store human resource policies and procedures.

- _Pharmaceutical Distribution_*•Assist in the gathering of information to create and maintain complete patient records.


  • Assess prescriptions for clarity, completeness, authenticity, and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Interpret prescriptions, perform any required calculation, and ensure the prescription information is recorded accurately on the patient record.
  • Perform accurate prescription adjudication and manage coverage related issues in cooperation with the patient and the Pharmacist.
  • Select, prepare, package, and label prescriptions for both commercially available products and extemporaneous compounds as outlined by policies and procedures.
  • Ensure prescriptions are checked by the Pharmacist or Regulated Pharmacy Technician prior to being distributed to the patient.
  • Complete appropriate documentation for all the tasks including, but not limited to, filling prescriptions and filing procedures.
  • Understand and adhere to the quality assurance policies/procedures for job performance management, medication error risk management and narcotic/controlled substances.
  • Maintain the confidential and sensitive nature of the pharmacy/patient relationship at all times in accordance with legislation and standards.
  • Enter and process sale of prescription and other purchase using the POS cash register.
  • Perform other duties assigned; as required, to ensure efficient operation of the pharmacy.

_Additional Pharmacy Administration Responsibilities_

  • Maintain inventory requirements sufficient for patient safety and efficient operations.
  • Coordinate the monitoring and removal of expired medication in accordance with provincial legislation.
  • Conduct inventory spot checks for accuracy, and manage out-of-stocks in accordance with store policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the dispensary is tidy and organized including the prescription sections, waiting area and counselling areas. Ensure RX and FS supplies are checked, restocked and ordered as necessary.
  • Ensure health information pamphlets are organized, updated and reordered as required for daily use and any planned clinics or seminars.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required to maintain efficient workflow within the dispensary and professional areas of the pharmacy.
  • Operate POS according to store policy, verifying customer receipts and issuing receipts.
  • Reconcile cash float at the beginning and end of shift as required.
  • If closing, reconcile total tender (cash, debit, credit, gift cards) to POS sales data and file "end-of-day cash envelope".
  • Process merchandise returns or refunds in an efficient manner in accordance with store policies.
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Pharmacy Assistants are not permitted to perform final checks on prescriptions.

_Pharmacy Health Care Services/Program Responsibilities_


In addition to dispensing services, the pharmacy also offers other health care services including, but not limited to, administering injections, medication reviews, prescription adaptations etc.
