Position Title

  • Occupational Health and Safety Manager
    Position Summary
  • We are currently seeking applicants for a permanent fulltime Occupational Health and Safety Manager to join the Risk, Privacy and Legal team.
  • Reporting to the Director, Risk, Privacy and Legal Services, the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Manager is a strategic partner and advisor within Red Deer Polytechnic's (RDP) Health and Safety Management System. The Manager is responsible for building an enhanced health and safety culture while managing compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and RDP's policies, practices, and standard operating procedures.

The OH&S Manager functions as a specialist advisor to Schools/Divisions in occupational health and safety legislation and industry best practices for faculty, staff, and students.

The OH&S Manager coordinates the development, delivery and creation of integrated health and safety services for RDP's current and future needs and in alignment with the strategic plan.

Key areas of accountability include health and safety management and advice, health and safety promotion and support with emergency and disaster preparedness and response.

This position is a key member of RDP's employee-employer partnership, and will foster a health, safety and wellness value system, building and maintaining a comprehensive health and safety program that involves management and workers proactively identifying and resolving health and safety concerns at the work site.

The OH&S Manager, together with work site parties designs and maintains programs and procedures to create and promote awareness and to prevent disease and injury caused by chemical, physical, biological, psychological, and ergonomic hazards at the workplace.


Position Responsibilities

Legislative Compliance and Program Development:


  • Develop and implement strategies, policies, programs, and initiatives to enhance OH&Spractices, ensuring institutional compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Establish protocols for risk assessment, incident reporting, investigation, and corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Develops and promotes programs for education and information concerning health and safety, continuously monitoring the effectiveness of these measures

Campus Engagement and External Communications:


  • Mentors interested individuals to champion OH&S elements throughout the campus.
  • Acts as a mentor and trusted advisor to the polytechnic leadership team related to Occupational Health and Safety matters and legislation (acts, codes, standards, and regulations).
  • Works closely with leaders across RDP to provide direction and consultative services in integrating OH&S into their operations and ensure work practices comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Acts as the contact person for consultation with relevant OH&S regulatory and professional associations.
  • Liases with government agencies to ensure familiarization with pertinent legislation.
  • Acts as the polytechnic representative on provincial postsecondary committees and special projects relating to occupational health and safety.

Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Response:

  • Collaborates with the Security Services Manager to develop and maintain RDP's Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Response plans
  • Participates in emergency response planning by providing information about health hazards, protective equipment, and work procedures to help protect emergency response personnel
  • Assumes the role of Safety Officer on the RDP Emergency Response Team
  • Works collaboratively with Polytechnic Leadership Team (PLT) and the RDP Emergency Response Team to develop communication strategies during a crisis
  • Supports the collaboration and coordination with community agencies and services with regards to emergency preparedness and response plans with the Security Services Manager

Workplace Investigations:


  • Establishes and oversees incident reporting systems to capture and investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Leads investigations into accidents, incidents, and occupational illnesses, determining root causes, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Analyzes trends in relation to recurring accidents, incidents, and occupational exposure within RDP and makes recommended action plan.
  • Develops and implements incident response plans to minimize harm and reduce the likelihood of future incidents.

People Leadership:


  • Responsible for effective recruitment and selection, retention, coaching, supervision, performance management, offboarding of direct report(s) in compliance with People and Culture policies and procedures, FOIP, and collective agreements in support of a high performing team
  • Directs the daytoday operations of direct report(s)
