Position Overview:


Under the general supervision of the Manager, Human Resources and Occupational Health & Safety, and while demonstrating a commitment to the Mission, Values and Management Philosophy of St.

Boniface Hospital, the HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISOR is responsible for working in collaboration with the Safety Coordinator in the delivery of the workplace safety program to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the patients, visitors and employees of St.

Boniface Hospital and the Research Enterprise.


Core Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provides guidance to employees and contractors about company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with the implementation of a safety program for the Hospital and Research Enterprise in compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations such as the Workplace Safety and Health Act (WS&H Act), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Workplace Hazardous Health Regulation (WHHR), Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act (TDG).
  • Coordinates accident investigation processes including reviewing significant accidents/incidents, compiling and analysing data, recommending control strategies and conducting followup.
  • Coordinates hospital safety inspections to detect workplace hazards, promotes compliance with health and safety legislation and recommends solutions.
  • Delivers safety education, training and awareness programs using a trainthetrainer approach and maintains training records.
  • Provides ongoing support and development and maintenance of Health & Safety policies for the Construction, Repair and Maintenance (CRM) group and the development and delivery of training programs related to construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Participates in Code Brown & Code Grey as a Team Leader. May participate in other Codes, as required.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the Respiratory Protection Program including respirator fit testing.
  • Conducts hygiene surveys in support of the Occupational Hygiene Survey Program.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the Hearing Conservation Program.
  • Provides support to the Safety Coordinator in the development, implementation and maintenance of the Biological Safety Program for the Research Enterprise.
  • Acts as the backup for Asbestos Management Program Officer.
  • Liaises with the provincial Workplace Safety and Health Division, the University of Manitoba, and other appropriate external agencies, institutions, organizations and regulatory bodies as required.

Experience:


  • Three (3) years' experience in Occupational Health and Safety or related experience, preferably in a health care environment.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate):


  • Postsecondary education in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Preference will be given to those with a bachelor's degree or higher in occupational health, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
  • Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or similar designation is an asset.

Special Training/Skills:


  • Familiar with industrial hygiene monitoring equipment.
  • First aid certificate.

Certification/Licensure/Registration:


  • Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or similar designation is an asset.
  • First aid certificate.

Qualifications and Skills:

Working knowledge of applicable safety and health legislation/regulations.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Strong communication skills both verbal and written as well as electronically.

Strong organizational and analytical skills.

Exceptional customer service skills are essential

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment is required.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

Strong accuracy and attention to detail is required.
