  • Job SummaryAn Underwriting Counsel with our Ontario Underwriting team is responsible for reviewing and handling underwriting issues and making insurability decisions for residential and commercial transactions

Responsibilities:


  • Handle policies for both residential and commercial real estate transactions.
  • Review and investigate complex underwriting issues (including title and offtitle matters) and real estate fraud mitigation issues, conduct risk assessments, and make insurability decisions.
  • Draft complex underwriting clauses (exceptions and coverage), policy documents (endorsements), and correspondence.
  • Review and interpret reports generated from identity verification tests.
  • Manage a high volume of files under tight timelines in accordance with established parameters.
  • Communicate and explain complex insurability decisions to clients both verbally and in writing.
  • Respond to external and internal enquiries regarding title insurance coverage, policyrelated matters (e.g. search requirements), fraud mitigation, identity verification tests, and other matters.
  • Answer and handle customer service calls through our general underwriting phone queue.
  • Provide high quality and timely service in response to enquiries from external and internal clients.
  • Recognize and redirect enquiries that should be addressed by other teams in the Company.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum 5 years real estate law firm/transaction experience or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of residential and commercial real estate transactions.
  • Understanding of the real estate process and title and offtitle issues, and their resolutions.
  • Understanding of real estate fraud trends, fraud red flags, and fraud mitigation tools.
  • Ability to work independently and make independent decisions in accordance with established parameters.
  • Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, customer service, organizational, and problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Good computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Word Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint). )
