Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview
Under the general supervision of the Director, and initially, under the direct supervision of a Tissue Transplant Coordinator II, the incumbent is responsible for the successful completion of on-the-job training and for demonstrating competency in all aspects Tissue Transplant Coordinator (II) functions including:
Screening potential donors to determine eligibility for tissue eye &/or donation.
Providing information about tissue donation to bereaved families and/or expectant mothers.
Obtaining a direction for tissue donation for transplantation, medical education or scientific research.
Coordinating and leading tissue recovery teams.
Conducting a full range of other tissue-banking services including tissue storage and distribution in accordance with federal regulations and tissue banking standards.
Processing, storing and dispensing amniotic membrane and eye tissue for transplantation.
The incumbent is also responsible for taking part in eye & tissue donation awareness programs targeting health care professionals, funeral home staff, and the general public.
NOTE:
THE DEGREE OF INDEPENDENCE AND LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY WILL INCREASE PROPORTIONATELY TO THE INCUMBENT'S INCREASED DEMONSTRATED PROFICIENCY.
Experience
Previous experience or training in surgical technology, operating room procedures, human dissection and/or allied health, medical, technical or mortuary field preferred.
Experience working with "standard operating procedures" (SOP's) and "good manufacturing practices" (GMP's) or "good tissue practices" (GTP's) established by regulatory agencies and/or working within a regulated environment preferred.
Previous supervisory experience preferred.Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution required. Preference will be given to licensed healthcare professionals.
Must commit to a comprehensive on-the-job training program to learn Tissue Bank Manitoba (TBM) Standard Operating Procedures (approximately 1-year) and pass the competency requirements as established by TBM in accordance with tissue-banking standards, as a condition of employment.
Registered as a Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS) or Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) with the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) or Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) respectively, preferred.
Once certified, maintains certification as a CTBS and/or CEBT by accruing the required AATB/EBAA continuing education units (CEU's) over the designated period.
Certification/Licensure/RegistrationRegistration as a Certified Tissue Bank Specialist and or Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT).
Current registration or eligibility for registration with the applicable (healthcare) licensing body is preferred.
Qualifications and Skills
Demonstrated ability to review and evaluate information in medical charts and obtain medical histories for the purpose of determining donor eligibility is preferred.
Strong customer service skills; ability to represent TBM in professional manner; excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work with people in crisis, dealing with death and dying in a sensitive manner.
Strong counseling skills preferred.
Knowledge of the concepts of tissue preservation and transplantation of human tissues/organs an asset.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team is required.
Physical Requirements
Position involves considerable walking, lifting, bending, stooping, carrying and standing for long periods.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 kg. at least 50 cm. from the floor to waist height.
Frequent exposure to blood, human tissue and body fluids while using personal protective equipment.
Required to be on-call frequently, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, and to work alone for long periods extending into
