  • All you need is your Alberta Journeypersons Certification, Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate (where applicable), a minimum of five years postjourneyperson work experience, and a strong determined desire to train the next generation of Trades people for the future while sharing your own valuable industry sector experiences.Red Deer Polytechnic's School Trades and Technology is the third largest Skilled Trades Apprenticeship training provider in Alberta, offering training in
    15 Apprenticeship trades and two Engineering Technology Diplomas. Our school's diverse programs are offered in nationalclass facilities and adjacent to innovation centers in manufacturing and alternative energy. This means our students have access to a wide range of experiences, expertise, and technologies. We pride ourselves in our instructors' ability to create meaningful, professional connections with our students and with employers in the sectors we serve which results in competent, successful graduates. RDP is a major sponsor of Skills Canada Alberta and has seen many of our students excel in Skills competitions provincially, nationally, and at World Skills.

RDP hires into three categories of Instructors:

Part-Time:


  • Parttime Instructors have a variety of start and end dates with contracts usually lasting 8 weeks in length.
  • This role is ideal for those looking to try out teaching for a short period of time.

Sessional:


  • Sessional instructors work fulltime for the school year from August to June.
  • This role is ideal for those looking to jump into teaching, build relationships with students and experience what it feels like to be an Instructor at RDP.

Continuous Probationary:


  • Continuous Probationary Instructors join RDP permanently.
  • This role is ideal for those with teaching experience and those looking to make an impact on their program, building curriculum and ensuring ongoing program success.


Class times take place during the day and evening and can be in-person or blended which means theory is taught online and practical skills is taught on-campus.

Our instructors have flexibility to do non-instructional work like grading and course preparations during the time that works best for them.


Position Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Associate Dean, Trades Instructors:
  • Maintain, develop, and instruct the theory and shop components of Alberta Apprenticeship program.
  • Teach students in a classroom and/or shop with flexibility for facetoface, hybrid, or online course delivery.
  • Create a stimulating, effective and learnercentered environment which includes preparing, reviewing, and updating course material.
  • Provide ongoing feedback, guidance, and assistance to students.
  • Participate in school, program, and other polytechnic service committees.
  • Support program promotion and student recruitment initiatives.
Instructors uphold the professional responsibilities of faculty and demonstrate RDP organizational values by following related policies and practices.

They are supported by the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Scholarship and are provided with a comprehensive onboarding experience to help ensure their success.


Required Qualifications

  • Alberta Journeypersons Certification with Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate (where applicable) in one of the
    15 Apprenticeship trades taught at RDP.
  • A minimum of five years postjourneyperson work experience.
  • Intermediatelevel proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Aptitude for mentoring and coaching others.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, and able to convey course topics to diverse students and learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching postsecondary students through both inperson and online formats.
  • Journeyperson certification in two or more additional related trades.
  • Experience working with and mentoring apprentices in the workplace.
  • Passion for teaching, ability to inspire students, and commitment to student learning and success.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and reflective practice.
