The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Manager, Policy and Heritage, this role is responsible for building and stewarding a progressive, innovative and collaborative cultural heritage portfolio. You will provide expert advice and interpretation on cultural heritage matters and lead cultural heritage initiatives, including policy updates and implementation in line with relevant provincial legislation, policies and plans, and local policies. You will be responsible for advancing cultural heritage conservation initiatives, supporting Indigenous engagement efforts, and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and best practices. As the Senior Planner, Cultural Heritage, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
- Develop and implement a refreshed cultural heritage planning program aligned with corporate priorities and Council's strategic plan
- Prepare and update cultural heritage strategies, programs and initiatives in collaboration with internal and external partners
- Review and comment on development proposals and Planning Act and Ontario Heritage Act applications, and provide evidence at the Ontario Land Tribunal as required
- Liaise with development proponents, the Municipal Heritage Committee, property and business owners, and community groups
- Lead heritage conservation initiatives, including financial incentive programs, and prepare reports and recommendations to Council and Committees
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a collaborative and knowledgeable professional with a post-secondary degree in Heritage Conservation, Geography, Planning, Urban Design, Architecture or a closely related field. Our ideal candidate has a minimum of five (5) years of progressive municipal cultural heritage planning experience and professional full membership in the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP). Certification as a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) in good standing with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) is required.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience interpreting and implementing the Ontario Heritage Act, Planning Act, and related provincial legislation and policy frameworks, as well as experience appearing before the Ontario Land Tribunal. We are seeking an individual with superior interpersonal and leadership skills, a demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex projects, and excellent communication and presentation skills.
The successful candidate for Senior Planner, Cultural Heritage will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).
This position offers a salary range of $118,280.17 to $147,850.22 plus a competitive benefit package.
