Under the direction of the BC Cancer Provincial Library Leader (PPL), the Clinical Librarian works cooperatively with other Library staff across BC Cancer sites to provide reference and research consultation services, literature searches, bibliographic instruction, information literacy training, and technical and library web support to staff, patients, and families.

The Clinical Librarian contributes to the planning and development of BC Cancer Library services and its short and long-range goals and objectives, assists in library collection and resource development and evaluation, and consults and provides recommendations on research methods, citation management, and online searching.

Establishes and maintains liaisons with BC Cancer programs to promote and develop knowledge-based services. Trains volunteers to assist with consumer health collections and assists with document delivery and circulation.


What you'll do

  • Provides general reference and indepth information, research, consultation and literature search services for clinicians, health care and research professionals, and other leadership and administrative groups across BC Cancer in support of evidencebased practice, research, governance, teaching and publishing. Collaborates on, or leads where appropriate, in relevant research or information projects.
  • Performs comprehensive expert literature searches for BC Cancer clinicians, researchers, and staff, by searching in online databases such as Medline, EBMR, Embase, and CINAHL; by searching for grey literature (including health statistics).
  • Provides reference services to patients and families, general members of the public, students, and non
- health-care providers, and creates patient information resources.

  • Participates in the planning, development and evaluation of the BC Cancer Library services, collections and technologies and its short and longrange goals and objectives to ensure that the library supports the larger goals, policies and strategic vision of BC Cancer as well as programspecific needs.
  • Assists in collection development activities to determine opportunities for improvement. Includes developing, evaluating and maintaining new and existing print and electronic library resources for both staff and the public including web content ensuring currency, relevancy and completeness. Consults with other departments regarding information and educational resource needs and makes materials recommendations and/or selection decisions. Troubleshoots connectivity and user/technical issues.
  • Assists with development and maintenance of BC Cancer integrated library system databases such as the catalogue, serials, borrowers, loans, pamphlets and orders.
  • Assists in the development and management of webbased services including the library websites, current awareness tools and curated online topic guides.
  • Develops and delivers formal and informal education through instructional workshops, orientations, print and online materials, and via remote learning platforms to enhance BC Cancer staff abilities to search, access, evaluate and use the best available evidence.
  • Liaises with BC Cancer programs to promote and develop knowledgebased services and training resources, collections and technologies, to facilitate collaboration and sharing across the organization.
  • Consults on and participates in patient education activities and supports health educators with the development, selection and approval of patient education resources.
  • Develops and delivers inperson, print and webbased communications, marketing, and awareness activities to promote the BC Cancer Library and information resources and services to staff and the public.
  • Works in conjunction with BC Cancer volunteer coordinators to train volunteers in the provision of consumer health resources.
  • Works with and provides direction and guidance to library support staff, students, and volunteers by methods such as coordinating work assignments and projects and monitoring for completion.
  • Participates in professional activities and maintains current knowledge of developments, technologies, and trends in library and information science. Liaises PHSA, regional and national clinical librarian networks to encourage collaboration and sharing across boundaries and sectors.
  • Performs other library related duties as assigned.
