    Description

Program Psychiatrist, Community Extension Team (CET)

CET psychiatrists provide psychiatric assessment, consultation and follow-up to the broad range of moderately to severely mentally ill patients. Most patients suffer from either a primary psychotic illness or a mood disorder with psychotic symptoms. These patients have recently been admitted to hospital and are often still very ill upon discharge and psychiatrists in CET provide ongoing psychiatric support for these patients until transitioning to a more long-term end point clinic. Many of these patients are on community treatment orders .The CET team comprises of mental health clinicians and outreach support workers who will often provide outreach support into the community. A strong biopsychosocial approach is taken to provide stability and ready the patient for transition to the next clinic. CET psychiatrists need to be available and responsive to this team who are often in the community supporting the patients

The successful applicant will be able to commit to at least two half-day clinics per week (occurring on different days) and will have their FRCPC currently or imminently along with their Alberta license. Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork skills and be comfortable with managing recently discharged community treatment order patients rapidly. On occasion, he/she will also have to be comfortable with doing home visits with their team. They will also need to demonstrate an ability to collaborate closely with both inpatient psychiatrists as well as outpatient psychiatrists due to the nature of the role of transition. They will need to also demonstrate a strong understanding of Community Treatment Orders here in the Alberta setting.Significant experience in Psychiatric support of transitioning patients from inpatients to outpatients would also be of benefit.

Please note that all CET psychiatrists participate in the on-call psychiatry roster for one of the four hospitals in the Calgary area. On-call hospital assignment usually depends on the area of highest need at the time of hiring.
