Your opportunity:


The Academic Advisor is a critical member of the team in the Registrar's Office and takes the lead in developing and delivering group sessions around support for students with academic risk-factors.

The Academic Advisor promotes a welcoming environment in the College for students from diverse backgrounds and serves as the primary support for at-risk group students.


This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto's Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Advising students on the development of their educational plans
  • Advising students on academic and/or financial matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background.
  • Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
  • Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
  • Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
  • Developing learning outcomes for workshops and/or services
  • Developing content for instructional workshops
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
  • Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years' of recent and related student academic advising experience in a university setting, preferably in a registrar's office.
  • Experience working with prospective and incoming students.
  • Experience and sound knowledge of best practices in advising and student services.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Advanced skills with ROSI/ACORN, Degree Explorer, or other similar enterprise database solutions/CRM systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated timemanagement skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi‐task and organize work, and meet tight deadlines while able to pay attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to provide effective guidance and advice to students in a responsive, empathetic, thoughtful, and discreet manner.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Assets (Nonessential):


  • Experience working with and advising international students and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with developing and facilitating workshops and seminars.
  • Knowledge of New College.
