Job description
Dutton Brown is a made-to-order colorful lighting and hardware brand based in Minneapolis, MN.We design and manufacture fixtures ranging from pendants and chandeliers to sconces, flush mounts, and cabinet hardware — all available in 13 powder coat colors and multiple metal finishes.
We're looking for an experienced 3D renderer to produce photo-realistic product images for our Shopify Plus storefront on an as-needed basis.
We have a complete asset library waiting for you — pre-built Rhino models, a custom KeyShot material library with all our finishes, a lighting environment, a white background scene file, and Photoshop templates showing expected color layer structure and export format.
An experienced renderer can review these and be producing results quickly.-
- WHAT YOU'LL DO
Primary work — White Background Product Renders:
- Import CAD files (.step, .f3d, .3dm) into Rhino 3D
- Assemble products with standard shared parts (canopies, bulbs, slip rings) from our parts library
- Set up materials and lighting in KeyShot using our prebuilt material library and lighting environment
- Deliver layered Photoshop .psd files for approval — one layer per powder coat color (13 standard colors)
- Export final .jpg files per a specific naming and numbering convention for direct Shopify upload
- Typical output per product: 39+ final images (13 colors × up to 3 finishes)
Secondary work — Space/Scene Renderings:
- Composite rendered products into licensed interior stock photography (kitchens, bathrooms, dining rooms)
- Match perspective, lighting, and shadow realistically
- Deliver .psd for approval, then export .jpg
- REQUIRED SKILLS & SOFTWARE
- Rhino 3D — for assembling models, managing layers, and preparing files for rendering
- KeyShot — for photorealistic rendering, material application, and lighting
- Adobe Photoshop — for creating multilayer color variant files and exporting final images

- WHAT A STRONG APPLICANT LOOKS LIKE
- Portfolio showing photorealistic product renders on white/neutral backgrounds — ideally home goods, furniture, hardware, or lighting
- Demonstrated ability to render accurate metallic finishes (polished brass, nickel, matte/satin black)
- Experience handling color/finish variants efficiently (not rendering from scratch each time)
- Organized and communicates clearly — we use a numbered task system with shared folders via OneDrive
- Comfortable working in a structured handover of existing files — this isn't a fromscratch setup; you're inheriting a working system
Nice to have:
- Experience with interior design or home decor brands
- Ability to match realworld powder coat colors accurately in KeyShot
- Interest in growing into 3D animation (KeyShot animation or After Effects compositing)
- WHAT YOU'RE INHERITING (READY ON DAY 1)
- 15+ prebuilt Rhino .3dm model files covering our mostrendered products
- Custom KeyShot material library (.kmp) with all finishes preconfigured — polished brass, nickel, black, and all 13 powder coat colors
- Custom lighting environment (.klf) and white background scene (.bip)
- Example Photoshop .psd with correct layer structure and color adjustment notes
- Standards documents covering space rendering workflow, Photoshop export standards, and file naming conventions
- Reference photography for all metal finishes and powder coat color swatches (.aco Photoshop file and RGB/HEX values)
- Parts library of common components in .step format (bulbs, canopies, slip rings, pipe fittings)
- Archive of 66+ completed task folders showing the expected output quality and file structure
- SCOPE & HOURS
- Asneeded — starting at approximately 1 product listing per week, each requiring 15–40 final images across color and finish variants (7+ listings in the queue to start)
- Growth potential — based on quality and turnaround, work will expand to include scene/lifestyle renderings and alternative views needed for 50+ existing products in our store
- Task delivery: Files shared via OneDrive. Download task inputs, upload .psd for approval, upload final .jpg exports.
- Payment: Via Upwork. Invoices reviewed and paid within 15 days of submission.
- HOW TO APPLY
Please include in your proposal:
- Portfolio links or samples — specifically photo-realistic product renders (not just conceptual/artistic 3D work)
- Confirmation of Rhino + KeyShot proficiency — and any version info (KeyShot 11+, Rhino 7+ preferred)
- Your hourly rate
- A brief description of a product rendering project you've completed — what was the input, what did you build, what was the output?
If you've rendered physical products in Rhino and KeyShot and know what a .kmp material pack is, you'll stand out immediately.
