Position Overview
The Communications Coordinator (coordinator) plays an important role in supporting Marketing, Communications, and Development efforts. The coordinator is responsible for supporting strategies aimed to increase awareness of PSF and grow the donor base.

The role helps to advance communication and knowledge translation within the Pacific Salmon Foundation community, educating the general public about research, community programs, and actions to advance Pacific salmon recovery.

The coordinator engages with PSF program teams and partners, writes and develops content for digital and print, supports media outreach, and develops communications tactics to reach target audiences.

An adept storyteller and communicator, the coordinator is skilled at translating complex biological research into lay-friendly language. The role supports awareness, facilitating education, enhancing donor engagement, and supporting events and fundraising initiatives.


Roles and Responsibilities

The Communications Coordinator's key responsibilities include:

  • Crafting compelling stories and developing multi-media content to support digital communications; website, blog, social media, e-news; and contributing as a writer for Pacific Salmon Foundation's print publications;
  • Media relations, sourcing story ideas, writing media materials such as advisories, pitches, and releases and engaging with reporters, and newsrooms to secure coverage;
  • Liaising with program leads and researchers to support knowledge translation and educate the community on the state of Pacific salmon and PSF's research activities and programs;
  • Coordinating outreach with BC's education community to maximize the use of existing and new resources and programs;
  • Tracking media hits and social media engagement and providing reports on results;
  • Posting copy and visual content to the PSF's website;
  • Staying up to date with emerging technologies and trends and demonstrating an understanding of how they integrate into communications programs;
  • Assisting in the development of digital and print marketing collateral materials with team members and external suppliers;
  • Coordinating photo shoots, video shoots and provide logístical support as required;
  • Managing multiple projects and competing responsibilities;
  • Supporting events with copywriting, logistics, and execution, as required;
  • Assisting the communications team with tracking and monitoring of budgets;
  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, representing the Foundation at events and with donors and stakeholders;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting and Supervision


Reporting to the Manager, Digital Marketing & Fundraising, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for undertaking all work identified by their manager and leadership to support organizational communications strategies.


Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in English, Journalism, Marketing or Communications;
  • A minimum of 2 years of work experience in communications (print, digital, and social media) or an equivalent of education and experience;
  • Experience in writing and content development for social media and web, content curation and planning;
  • Familiarity with Wordpress, Canva, Hootsuite, MailChimp and other digital marketing tools;
  • Familiarity with media relations, pitching stories and arranging interviews;
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and time management skills;
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines;
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team environment and to demonstrate a high degree of initiative;
  • Comfortable working with diverse stakeholder groups on contentious resource management issues;
  • The ability to exercise tact, discretion, diplomacy and maintain confidentiality;
  • Nice to have:
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities/partners;
  • Graphic design and/or video editing experience.

Compensation
