    Position Summary
  • Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Science & Management, the Lab Technician is responsible for the efficient operations of the Fine Arts Print Shop and ensuring all technical requirements related to supporting students, faculty and the operation of the departments are met. The Lab Technician is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College, incorporating and practicing the values in everything they do.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with Information Technologies Department Network/Systems Analyst & Apple Administrator to maintain efficient operations of the Mac Labs and Print Shop
  • Assist IT with the Mac Labs replacement and cascade of Mac computer systems
  • Annual set up of Mac Lab systems preferences and customization
  • Install minor software updates to Mac Lab, Print Shop (including laptops and devices) and faculty office Mac systems
  • Set up of student accounts.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of lab scanners, printers and projectors
  • Troubleshoot network issues with lab printers and report to IT to resolve
  • Troubleshoot student's password issues student accounts and FTP liaise with IT to resolve issues

  • In consultation with instructional faculty deliver technical demonstrations for digital technologies.
  • Provide general technical support and advice to students and faculty for software and hardware in the department computer labs and equipment loan inventory.
  • Support student registration in external web hosting
  • Supports student registration in specialized external software.
  • Provide advice and information in troubleshooting problematic files.
  • Supports the technical requirements of Fine Arts department events including the Art Event, Graduation exhibition, Industry Night and guest lecturers.
  • Develops technical instruction and reference materials as required.
  • Operate equipment Loan program
  • Provide technical support to faculty in developing videos for technical demonstrations, including video capture, editing and the upload of material to various platforms.
  • Provide technical support for students and faculty for specialized internet platforms specific to the department.
  • Implement setup, maintenance and provide technical support for studio and Mac Lab online station booking system.
  • Provide technical support in researching and installing hardware and software for instructor online teaching stations.

OPERATIONS

  • Administration and maintenance of department equipment inventory database, including ongoing data entry for new department equipment and decommissioning (in consultation with department chair) of nonfunctioning equipment.
  • Management and delivery of the Equipment Loan program
  • Maintenance of department nonsystems equipment including items in the equipment loan inventory, instructional carts systems, photo/video studio equipment and darkroom equipment.
  • Maintenance of photo/video studio and department computer labs
  • Monitors budgets, completes purchase requisitions, maintains accurate inventory, and ensures sufficient supplies of consumables are available to meet instructional and operational requirements.
  • Responsible for recommendations for system capital purchases including Mac Lab replacements.
  • Provide service for print shop payments utilizing a POS terminal, tasks include summarizing payments/creating batch reports and submitting to Finance for reconciling.
  • Provide technical support in print production services
  • Provide technical support and information in troubleshooting problematic files.
  • In consultation with the Department Chair, researches new equipment, products and materials for department programs.
