Job Summary

  • The Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine (APMPM) is a large, complex clinical and academic department that provides patient care, delivers education and conducts research in the areas of anesthesia, pain management and perioperative medicine. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Communications and Special Projects support Advisor provides strategic communications support, advice and strategy and coordinates special events and projects to advance the department's vision and mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Creates and maintains the communications strategy, which includes internal communications to members/faculty and external communications to key stakeholders and future learners and clinical faculty recruits.
  • Coordinates the department's online presence and social media activity.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of department priorities and academic and clinical activity in order to effectively communicate the department's vision, mission and strategic directions. Participates in various committees as necessary to support their objectives and provide communications advice and guidance.
  • Prepares the annual report. Solicits stories and edits submitted articles or texts from faculty and staff members, interviews staff and creates content.
  • Manages and coordinates special projects such as overseeing the Department's awards and recognition program, coordinating special events and celebrations, and managing calendars of events highlighting special events or commemorative days, as well as award program deadlines. Projects are of a wide variety and will vary depending on departmental priorities and planning.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on site and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements, university and health authority guidelines.

As the Department is housed within the Nova Scotia Health and IWK facilities, proof of Covid vaccination is required.

Dalhousie's vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees (other than those with positions located at NSH/IWK or other health care facilities) are no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination.

However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.


Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Communications or related field (English, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing), plus approximately three to five years' relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement and discretion in dealing with sensitive and highly confidential information.
  • Service oriented, highly motivated, and equally capable of working independently as well as part of a team.

Assets

  • Experience in creating and executing successful communications strategies, preferably in a medical or university environment.
  • Experience with generating integrated content (creation of written content, video and/or photography) in a communications role, including the development of promotional material, newsletters, and annual reports.
  • Experience with social media and website maintenance.
