Engineering Department

Overview

The City of Chilliwack Utilities Engineering team supports the City's water, sewer and wastewater treatment systems by planning and delivering capital investment projects, developing and implementing water and wastewater policies and, monitoring and reporting to federal and provincial regulators on a wide range of issues.

In this position, you will be responsible for performing technical and administrative work relating to all aspects of municipal utilities including water resource management, drinking water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment systems.


You will be responsible for research, field monitoring and reporting on issues relating to groundwater sustainability and drinking water supply as well as implementing a growing water conservation program.

You will also be responsible data analysis, research, reporting and making policy recommendations for the City's sewer system including implementing its source control program.

Your role will include supporting the wastewater treatment plant team by collecting and analysing data and managing consultants you have engaged to prepare reports required by regulations governing the operation of the plant and discharge into the Fraser River.

You will be involved in the capital and policy planning process by identifying issues of emerging environmental concern and proposing strategies address them.

You will help the team with capital planning decisions to evaluate water and sewer capacity constraints and to respond to enquiries from internal and external stakeholders.

You will assist with capital project delivery by managing design consultants and contractors and ensuring feedback from engineering and other departments as appropriate.

You will need excellent written and oral communication skills and be keen to develop excellent working relationships with other departments and external partners.


Are you the one we're looking for?

  • Must have degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering and post graduate experience in municipal utilities, water or wastewater OR an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;
  • Sound knowledge of principles, practices and regulation concerning water resource management including water conservation programs;
  • Sound knowledge of environmental principles, practices and regulation governing drinking water supply including quality monitoring and contaminants of concern;
  • Sound knowledge of environmental principles, practices and, regulation governing wastewater collection and treatment including source control programs and environmental monitoring;
  • Sound ability to collect and analyse data relating to water and wastewater characteristics;
  • Knowledge of municipal bylaws, zoning regulations and other pertinent regulations/polices pertaining to the operation of the department;
  • Knowledge of principles and practices relating to design and operation of water distribution and sewer collection systems;
  • Knowledge of principles and practices relating to design and operation of wasterwater treatment systems;
  • Ability to prepare procurement documents for, and manage effective delivery of, consulting engineering services.


The incumbent will normally work the standard work week of Monday to Friday within the hours required to ensure effective performance and work overtime as authorized.

The incumbent will be required to travel in the performance of duties. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Union Agreement.

The rate of pay for this position is $50.32 per hour (2024 rate)
