$60, $68,000.00 per year


Location:
Remote, preferably based in Central/Eastern Canada


Travel:
This position requires travel up to approximately twice a month within Central/Eastern Canada

JOB SUMMARY


The Accessibility Specialist, Built Environment works closely with the Director, Accessibility Advisory Services on projects to support organizations and clients who want to provide meaningful accessibility and inclusion in the built environment for people of all abilities.


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS


The Accessibility Specialist, Built Environment reports to the Director, Accessibility Advisory Services and works closely with the AAS and RHFAC team.

This position also works with external clients and site managers.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Works closely with the Director, Accessibility Advisory Services to provide technical expertise to organizations who are focused on improving accessibility in the built environment to achieve certification under RHFAC;
  • Attends client meetings with the Director to determine project scope and requirements;
  • Prepares and submits proposals and bidding for projects;
  • Advises organizations on achieving best practices in accessibility in Universal Design to achieve certification under the RHFAC program;
  • Reviews project plans for new construction and retrofit projects to ensure accessibility requirements are included early in the process;
  • Assesses facilities via onsite visits, review of drawings and planning documents, and discussions with site managers to determine accessibility levels;
  • Prepares recommendations and implementation plans for accessibility improvements;
  • Conducts presentations;
  • Manages projects including preparing scope, scheduling, tracking, delivering and reporting;
  • Monitors status of expenditures, accounts receivable, billable hours, maintaining records and filing reports; and
  • Performs other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, experience and skills/behaviours will be considered.

Education:
Degree or diploma in architecture, architectural technology, engineering or equivalent.


Certification/Designations:
RHFAC Professional Designation or has completed the RHFAC Training course preferred.


Experience/Knowledge

  • Minimum 5 years of related experience working in accessibility in the built environment;
  • Experience with Word, Excel PowerPoint, SharePoint, a CRM like Salesforce. Preferred experience with industry standard design and building modelling software such and as AutoCAD, Photoshop and InDesign;
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Adobe Suite or InDesign is an asset;
  • Fluency in French and English, oral and written, is an asset;
  • Technical knowledge and expertise related to accessibility in the built environment including building codes and other relevant legislations;
  • Practical knowledge of commonly applied Universal Design principles;
  • Knowledge of accessible building codes/guidelines and ongoing current understanding of all relevant accessibility standards; and
  • Knowledge or experience working with individuals with disabilities.

Skills/Behaviours

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate highly specialized and technical information to a variety of audiences;
  • Ability to read and interpret highdetail construction documents and architectural drawings;
  • Ability to interpret data from (photos, measurements, site notes) and RHFAC scorecards to create reports highlighting areas of success and
