Summary of Position
Abalone Construction is a privately owned company with over 40 years specializing in Industrial and Commercial civil construction. We offer construction services in a variety of markets including Infrastructure, Roadbuilding, and Land Development.


The Civil Earthworks Estimator is an integral member of Operations team, responsible for all stages of developing competitive cost estimates and proposals on a variety of heavy civil and earthworks projects in Western Canada.


Role and Responsibilities

_ Technical Estimating_

  • Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates including quantity takeoffs, vendor and subcontract management systems, internal material processes. Use of templates and coding.
  • Experience estimating green and brownfield facility / energy projects which may include grading, lined containments, ponds, piping, foundations etc.
  • Familiar with industrial standards with respect to material, installation methods and testing requirements.
  • Ability to accurately perform complete takeoffs utilizing CAD based software to generate 3D models for means of both establishing and validating tender quantities.
  • Prepare final bid, complete with markup base on market conditions, Abalone policy and in conjunction with the Project Manager and Senior Management group
  • Collaborate with Project team when preparing bids

_ Contract Administration_

  • Carry out contract administration including tendering process, proposals, contract and drawings review
  • Attend pretender site meeting/visits as required
  • Set up job for all projects estimated and awarded to Abalone, including credit approval, bonding, insurance, WCB clearance, schedules, subcontractor agreements, purchase orders, as well as internal job setup for operations & accounting
  • Verify contract document & plans for accuracy and prepare detailed quantity takeoffs of project materials
  • Identifying and quantifying contract changes and related change orders for operational review
  • Other duties as assigned by the estimating group

_ Construction Techniques_

  • Adheres and follows Abalone's safety and environmental policies

_ Business Knowledge_

  • Monitor construction market to identify suitable projects and obtain approval for Abalone to bid
  • Follow up with submitted bid to track the market and identify strategic direction

Qualifications, Training and Education

  • Engineering Degree or Engineering Technology Diploma, eligible for registration with professional association.
  • 5+ years' experience in heavy civil earthworks and heavy civil earthworks cost estimating of projects in various sizes ranging from $2M to $30M
  • Ability to accurately perform a complete takeoff from a set of drawings
  • Strong relational skills with ability to build professional connections
  • Ability to work with high volumes, work within tight deadlines, and thrive under pressure
  • Superior computer skills in MS Office, Bluebeam, Vista, Primavera and Bid2Win
  • Strong attention to detail and possess a solid work ethic
  • Experience with organizational communication (verbal and written), work planning and organization

Working Conditions
This position would be office based and involve infrequent visits to the field for inspections and audits.

This position will require occasional physically demanding work in different positions (kneeling, standing, lifting, etc.), as well as long periods of sitting/typing while performing office & computer related tasks.
