    JOB SUMMARY:

    Reporting to the Division Head of Nephrology and the designated Medical Director, the nephrologist focuses on medicine involving the care provided to patients with kidney disease or fluid and electrolyte imbalance.

    The nephrologist provides care to patients at all stages of disease or failure involving kidney function, both congenital and acquired. This includes primary prevention in people presenting a high risk of kidney disease, management of acute episodes of kidney failure and, in patients with chronic kidney disease, delivery of ongoing care, monitoring of the evolution of the disease and use of secondary prevention strategies. Nephrology includes providing long-term life-sustaining care using renal replacement therapy. In fact, various methods of treatment exist for patients with end-stage renal disease, including peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and kidney transplant. The nephrologist also uses extracorporeal treatment methods to manage toxicity and metabolic disorders.

    The nephrologist is also required to take part in the research activities underway in their field of practice.

    The nephrologist takes an active part in teaching activities in their department, in close collaboration with the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau?Brunswick. The nephrologist agrees to train students on rotation and contribute to the teaching activities of the training centre.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Degree from a recognized medical school and residency granting a licence in internal medicine;

    A recognized medical school is a school that meets the following criterion:

    • Accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) (in the United States);

    OR

    • Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a note for Canada under the Sponsor Notes tab;
    • Recognized certification in nephrology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada;
    • Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick;
    • Active membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association;
    • Membership in the New Brunswick Medical Society;
    • Privileges with Vitalité Health Network;
    • Registration with New Brunswick Medicare;
    • One to three years' experience will be considered an asset;
