AVP Financial Reporting & Controls


Reporting to the VP, Financial Reporting, SLF Canada, this role is accountable for the accounting and controls capability within Canadian Finance.

This role will also lead the program management of IFRS 17, working closely with the Canadian Actuarial and ALM functions and in close partnership with the Business Units and the SunRise project team.

This role will support senior management decision making and is the primary liaison with the internal audit and external auditors for SLF Canada.


The individual in this role is a key contact for accounting & controls (including IFRS 17 implementation) for SLF Canada and must have the ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of management across SLF Canada and within SLF Corporate Office (including SunRise), as well as effectively managing the relationship and work completed by external audit.

A practical problem solver, effective delegator, with the ability to challenge the status quo through direct communication and a focus on the client while building successful relationships across the business is required.


What you'll be doing:


  • Accounting and Controls:
  • Ensure the integrity of all consolidated quarterly financial information for SLF Canada
  • Accountable for the integrity of the SLF Canada general ledger and the SLF Canada financial close process
  • Attest that all financial information has proper controls and governance; this requires a close partnership with the Chief Accountant's Office
  • Accountable for the governance of accounting and ledger controls and the review/approval of monthly consolidated control functions such as account reconciliations
  • Effectively partners with the Actuarial and Risk Management functions to create a robust and effective independent financial risk and control environment
  • IFRS 17 Program Management
  • Accountable for the management of the IFRS 17 program in Canada including the alignment of priorities, key decisions, risks, resources and budget
  • Act as the primary liaison for SLF Canada
  • Working closely with the AVP actuarial and AVP ALM, the incumbent is responsible for bringing key decision topics to senior management.
  • Is the key liaison for audit internal and external audit
  • Manage the Finance SWAT (Specialized Work/Action Team), comprising of agile resources that can be deployed to various functions/BUs to support agreed upon milestones, at the same time adapting to changing priorities as the program progresses.

What you'll need to succeed:


  • Professional accountant (CPA) with 10 years of experience in IFRS, life insurance accounting, and financial control knowledge
  • Broad knowledge and deep understanding of the insurance business.
  • Ability to independently shape, produce, and deliver ideas, presentations, and documents tailored to Executive and Boardlevel audiences.
  • Ability to independently define how to approach work, engage and influence stakeholders including navigating in a matrix organization, manage through ambiguity, address challenges and meet timelines to deliver the work of the function. Experience working in agile is an asset.
  • Possesses a growth mindset with willingness to challenge the status quo, try new things, test & learn and empower others to do the same, innovates and finds new solutions that solve business problems or create business opportunities.
  • Grounds decisions in facts, leverages data to generate new insights and opportunities. Informs strategies and decisions through knowledge of current external research and trends.
