Position Purpose:


The Supervisor, Design, oversees the Distribution Design group including the design of customer projects, capital renewal projects and relocations of distribution system plants.

This position approves project designs to ensure technical competence and design compliance in accordance with policies and standards.


Responsibilities:


  • Plans, schedules, organizes, reports on status and supervises the implementation of electrical distribution system projects including, budget estimates, detailed estimates, complete designs, obtaining approvals, liaising with other internal departments, road authorities, municipalities, design and civil/HV contractors, regulatory agencies, and customers to provide project information in a timely manner
  • Coordinates and participates in site plan reviews to identify in advance any potential challenges or hydro servicing requirements for all types of proposed developments or redevelopments
  • Assists division leads with the monitoring, assessment and management of distribution assets to maximize asset value and minimize the long term cost of ownership
  • Ensures designs are completed with adequate lead times and within capital budget and KPI requirements
  • Monitors project estimated vs. actual costs and reviews variance reports with team
  • Supervises the design of all capital projects including customer, controllable and noncontrollable capital projects
  • Conducts the process review and continual improvement of the design/build cycle to align with industry best practices
  • Plans, organizes and supervises daily activities of operational unit
  • Provides coaching, development, performance management, technical guidance and advice
  • Provides input into department goals and objectives
  • Leads and/or participates in department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget
  • Researches, recommends and implements new or enhanced policies, procedures and processes to improve operational effectiveness
  • Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Annual preparation of department's 5 year capital budget, C55, business cases, etc.
  • Quarterly forecasting of current year capital budget. Review project statuses with Design Technologists and prepare reports for senior management.
  • Assist with responding to deficiencies identified by the Electrical Safety Authority and internal/external staff after the project has been released for construction. Assist in developing/prioritizing action plans with various orders, proposes changes and improvements.
  • Provides advice to customers and consultants, monitors department work progress to ensure proper customer service levels are maintained and deals with escalations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications:


Education

  • Engineering Technologist Diploma with C.E.T. designation and a registered member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with P. Eng. designation and a registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) in good standing would be an asset
  • Must hold and maintain a valid "G" driver's license

Specialized knowledge

  • Engineering knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control
  • Working knowledge of technical specifications/standards including CSA, CEA, and ESA
  • Knowledge of Microstation or AutoCAD drafting, cable pulling calculations, circuit loading analysis, pole calculations/nonlinear analysis, and GIS
  • Fluency in Project Management disciplines to manage project scope, budget, and schedule

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or lead role, or successful completion of a recognized leadership or supervisory course
  • Experience in a unionized utility environment is an asset

  • Strong written and presentation skills, with the ability to convey information accurately and concisel
