Detailed Overview:
Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Services and working under clinical supervision of the Professional Practice Chief, Respiratory Therapy and the Program Coordinator, Thompson Rivers University, organizes and operates the clinical training program for Respiratory Therapy students at the Hospital, in accordance with established Hospital policies and procedures


Responsibilities:

  • Assigns and coordinates clinical activities of Respiratory Therapy students on rotation.
  • Ensures adequate supervision of students involved in patient care.
  • Where appropriate, and in collaboration with Respiratory Therapy Department Preceptors, instructs students in technical and therapeutic procedures related to respiratory care, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Provides orientation program for new students in order to familiarize them with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Organizes and provides adequate academic supplement to clinical training program through use of hospital teaching facilities.
  • Provides and implements an evaluation system for students during their clinical training.
  • Attends clinical working committee meetings regarding student training.
  • Acts as a liaison between management, the training institute, and other departments following consultation with the departmental Manager.
  • Supplies Program Chairperson with student progress records.
  • Liaises with Program Chairperson and other Clinical site coordinators regarding student information, program operations and program curriculum.
  • Liaises with physicians and directors to ensure that the practicum course content reflects the most recent changes in practices, procedures and technological advances.
  • Provides staff development/instruction regarding the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) program and supervision, teaching and evaluation of students.
  • Represents TRU's Respiratory Therapy Program interests as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. Successful completion of the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care credentialing exam. Eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).

Completion of a professional instructional course for teaching at the college level, e.g., Instructional skills workshop, Instructors Diploma Program, Adult Education Certification, or equivalent.

Three years' recent, related experience including the supervision and teaching of students in an acute care teaching Hospital. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Level C.

  • Ability to maintain knowledge of current developments in Respiratory Therapy by reviewing professional literature, consulting with other professionals and actively participating in relevant educational programs.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
