Job Location:
Western Newfoundland

Salary Range:
$60,000-67,000 annually. ($30-$35/hr)

Position Objectives:

The Biologist will manage projects through sequential phases, from initial assessment, through planning, implementation, results, and lessons learned. Working both independently and with other staff, he/she will work efficiently and achieve deliverables within set timeframes.

The main objectives stem from a multi-year collaborative initiative for the recovery of species at risk in western Newfoundland, with major funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada's Community-Nominated Priority Place program.

Core partners include federal and provincial departments, First Nation Bands, other nonprofit conservation organizations, and university researchers. Engaging local communities and interest groups is a fundamental principle of the work.

The individual will report to the General Manager of Intervale and be guided by the organization's Founder, who currently serves as President.

The individual will possess an outlook that embraces increasing responsibility over time. Depending on performance and budgetary consideration, the position may offer advancement leading to a program director level.

Background on Intervale:

Intervale Associates Inc.

is a nonprofit organization, incorporated in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2004, with a mission to conserve biodiversity, interpret heritage, and promote the integrity of rural livelihoods.

Based in western Newfoundland, the organization takes a community approach to the conservation of fish and wildlife and the recovery of species at risk.

Programs generally fall into four themes: 1) recovery of terrestrial species at risk; 2) reducing threats to aquatic species at risk; 3) conserving wild Atlantic salmon populations and freshwater habitats; and 4) outreach to promote conservation.

The organization attracts individuals who are passionate about Newfoundland and Labrador's rugged landscape and varied culture that is steeped in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage.

The long-serving senior staff demonstrate superior dedication to the organization's growth and prosperity.

Originally from rural Newfoundland and Labrador communities themselves, senior staff are committed to ensuring that projects generate benefits to small communities.

Intervale Associates is celebrating its 20th anniversary year in 2024. Intervale strives for an inclusive work environment. Staff manage their work from a home office and meet regularly. Occasional evening and weekend work is required; travel can involve overnight stays.

Western Newfoundland is a region of highest biodiversity for the province-embracing over 3.2 million hectares of mostly forested (boreal) landscape, and home to 19 federally listed or COWSEWIC assessed species at risk.

The region includes 50 scheduled salmon rivers, one national park, 10 provincial parks, six provincial Ecological Reserves, and areas of ecological importance that are protected through stewardship agreements or other means.

The region supports small, coastal communities with local economies based on fisheries, extraction of natural resources, and tourism.

Full Job Description

The goal is to achieve progress toward the recovery of terrestrial species at risk and their habitats in coastal, barrens, and forested areas of western Newfoundland, through coordinated multi-partner actions that engage communities and First Nations.

Intervale is lead organization among the project's partners, including Qalipu First Nation, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and NL Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture.

Activities are designed to benefit many species, including but not restricted to Piping Plover, Red Knot, Bank Swallow, Short-eared Owl, seabirds and waterfowl, Newfoundland marten, Little Brown Myotis, polar bear, black ash, and rare plant species of the limestone barrens.

The work requires the Conservation Biologist to prioritize threats, develop strategies, implement actions, record and analyze data, document impact, and share lessons learned.

The position requires frequent written and verbal reporting on progress, plus substantial communication and outreach to community groups. Project partners meet monthly to plan and report. Educational materials and age-specific presentations inform and engage the public.

The Conservation Biologist needs to be familiar with the geography of western Newfoundland, passionate about its varied natural and cultural heritage, and comfortable working with people on the human dimensions of wildlife management.

He/she will engage in a variety of educational activities aimed at, for instance, helping to reduce disturbance to wildlife or damage to wildlife habitat, and addressing various audience groups.
