- Handling, culturing, and storage of microbes (Biosafety level 1 and 2) using aseptic technique, including Biosafety cabinet use.
- Media preparation, sterile processing, use of autoclaves.
- Plasmid isolation and preparation.
- Large-scale buffer and general solution preparation.
- Laboratory supply ordering, storage, inventory.
- Daily laboratory setup and take down.
- Assisting in plant propagation, care, and maintenance.
- Maintaining growth chambers.
- Preparation and sterilization of tissue/cell culture media and equipment.
- Maintaining established animal cell lines.
- Ensure security of labs, stores and equipment.
- Organization and disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste.
- Use inventory management program to keep records of consumption and purchase of supplies.
- Conduct regular performance checks/minor repairs of lab equipment. Coordinate replacement and/or repair of damaged or broken tools or equipment.
- Perform periodic calibration of equipment.
- Prepare documentation concerning general lab operations and procedures.
- Devise and follow quality assurance procedures for workplace tasks.
- Contribute to creating a positive, diverse, inclusive work and learning environment.
- Three years recent/relevant experience in a biological field/laboratory, including program-relevant skills in microbiology, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry.3. Member of/or eligible for certification with relevant certifying body, such as Technology Professionals Saskatchewan (TPS) as an Applied Science Technologist or Certified Technician.4. Experience with program-relevant software and equipment and their integration.5. Effective interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.6. Strong organizational and time management skills including planning, scheduling, and prioritizing workloads in a dynamic environment.7. Strong data and records management skills with a digital focus.8. Effective problem-solving skills with strict attention to detail.9. Demonstrated competence and recent experience in the use of the internet, e-mail, MS Office Suite software, familiarity with learning management systems, and the ability to learn and adapt to changing technology.10. Ability to function as an effective team member in an ever-changing environment.11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with many diverse groups, including other departments within Saskatchewan Polytechnic, staff, faculty, and industry stakeholders.12.
