The Risk Management Consultant provides expertise to the organization to consult on systems of loss control in healthcare; promoting patient, staff/affiliate, visitor and caregiver safety through identifying risks and system failures in the healthcare setting, potential gaps in protocols, processes or procedures, improve care delivery processes, develop and implement strategies to eliminate or manage those risks to mitigate further harm in clinical care, reduce medical malpractice and liability claims and adverse events, and protect the staff and affiliates, reputation, finances and assets of LHSC.


The Risk Management Consultant will have oversight of LHSC's corporate insurance program, working closely with the insurance providers and LHSC leadership teams.

This role assures compliance with applicable healthcare legislation and LHSC Corporate Policies and Procedures and promotes a culture of safety in a healthcare setting and the achievement of LHSC's objectives.


How you will contribute:


Risk Analysis

  • Identifies potential risks to LHSC (people, assets, financial, clinical and reputational) and supports LHSC with mitigation strategies to decrease or eliminate the risks to protect the organization against risks associated with accidental losses, regardless of cause, including but not limited to: reducing liability from adverse events related to personal and bodily injury occurrences, including death and asset preservation.
  • Analyzes actual and potential exposures through claims activity and adverse events and the monitoring and evaluation of risk management strategies.
  • Provides risk management expertise and consultations all levels of the organization in addition to risk advice on new or existing technology projects, agreements or projects.

Corporate Insurance Program

  • Act as a liaison between insurers and hospital leaders.
  • Facilitates annual insurance renewal process for corporate insurance program and ensures completion of an annual Risk Assessment Checklist.
  • Supports the Manager in preparing updates to Executive leadership or the Board of Directors as required.
  • Drafts, reviews, and provides feedback on contracts and agreements collaborating with stakeholders (internal and external) to achieve corporate objectives and identify any potential risks and strategies to reduce the risk to the organization.

Claims Administration

  • Acts as a liaison between LHSC and hospital insurers to report any claims and facilitate/support ongoing investigation and follow up, including litigation. Serves as the liaison with Hospital's defense counsel by using corporate judgment and knowledge and providing evidence and representing the Hospital at Examination for Discovery.
  • Serves as a hospital representative for legal proceedings or support hospital staff in preparation for litigation and investigates unexpected occurrences involving death, loss of limb or function, serious psychological injury or risk thereof, and patient, caregiver and visitor complaints to assess liability risk.
  • Assesses potential for legal exposure by conducting investigations through review of all relevant records, system information, direct interviews and historical information.
  • Provides education and support to staff members involved in a legal claim.
  • Works directly with patient/family/outside counsel to resolve small, appropriate claims with approval of Risk Management Leadership.
  • Prepares fact summaries on a wide variety of potential exposures to provide to Insurer and Legal counsel.
  • Liaises with leadership and appropriate stakeholders where there is a potential and/or identified issue with media related to an open legal claim or a sensitive patient/family issue.

Qualifications:


  • Successful completion of Bachelor's degree in Commerce or a Health Related Discipline
  • OHA Risk Management Certificate, or a Certificate of Fellowship in Risk Management (CRM, FRM)
  • Preferred
  • Paralegal diploma and/or Certified Information privacy Professional-Canada
  • Preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of recent, related experience
  • Advanced knowledge of Risk Management (loss prevention, insurance)
  • Advanced knowledge of Health Care Law, applicable Legislation a nd Accreditation Standards
  • Exemplary communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Excellent analytical, assessment and evaluation skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple and changing demands
  • Advanced skills in negotiation, facilitation, coaching, and conflict resolutions
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and data management software
