    Job Summary

    The Interviewer/Outreach Worker (Bilingual – English/Mandarin) operates as a member of a multidisciplinary, collaborative research team. The Interviewer recruits and prescreens potential participants, conducts structured interviews of eligible research participants enrolled in relevant project; and assists in data collection, data cleansing, and data entry resulting from interviews. The Interviewer/Outreach Worker also performs outreach activities and connects people with community services as needed.

    Supervised by and reporting to the Project Coordinator.

    CENTRE AFFILIATION

    Located on unceded Coast Salish territories (Vancouver, BC), the Centre for Gender and Sexual Equity (CGSHE) is a UBC Faculty of Medicine research centre ) and affiliated with SFU. The CGSHE has a strategic mandate of leadership in promoting gender equity and sexual health for all through research, policy and practice. The Centre includes over 40 faculty members, hosts an equity-oriented and interdisciplinary training program with a large cohort of affiliated undergraduate trainees, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, and supports a growing number of UBC/SFU community-engaged research teams working across BC, nationally and globally. CGSHE works in highly collaborative space and strives to hire members from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.

    ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

    Reports to and is supervised by the Project Coordinator.

    WORK PERFORMED

    • Recruits potential participants, provides information and answers questions about research studies.
    • Prescreens potential research subjects in person according to study protocols and enrolls eligible participants.
    • Conducts quantitative structured interviews with eligible participants and performs outreach for follow up interviews.
    • Conducts outreach and interviews off site at community services and/or other facilities with varying environments (e.g. drop-in centres, shelters, non-profit residences, private SROs, health care facilities, public spaces in inner city setting) using approved transportation options.
    • Adheres to informed consent procedures and ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects.
    • Reviews questionnaires for completeness and accuracy.
    • Ensures policies and procedures for data management are followed and all documents are entered and filed as required by ethical guidelines.
    • Responsible for processing participant honoraria, including paying participant and recording honoraria for daily float reconciliation.
    • Transports blood and urine samples to St. Paul's Hospital as needed.
    • Participates in knowledge translation presentations to community organizations as needed.
    • Assists with training staff on data collection protocols as needed.
    • Refers participants to appropriate services and/or provides initial support when required.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    This position would initially be remote and as COVID-19 restrictions ease, the incumbent will work out of the CGSHE/ UBC Gender Research Hub, a community/ clinical research space in the Downtown Eastside. Travel to communities for meetings will be required from time to time (as public health allows).

    CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR/JUDGEMENT

    Works within well-defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to supervisor.

    This position entails a high level of confidentiality and discretion. Failure to maintain research and program information in confidence could result in damage to credibility and poor relations with internal and external stakeholders. Errors in judgment could result in serious financial or

    reputational consequences for the Centre, undermining the Centre's ability to meet commitments and achieve its strategic objectives, including the inability to successfully meet granting agencies' deliverables. Poor public/private sector relationships could result in a negative image of CGSHE and may impact levels of research funding made available through partnerships. Errors could result in significant concerns regarding the liability, credibility, and integrity of the Centre, PHC/ PHCRI, and the University.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED

    Supervised and reports to the Project Coordinator. Work may involve simple techniques and methods requiring knowledge and/or procedures that are readily acquired and used generally in repetitive or simple applications; the nature of work is routine and clearly defined; all problems are referred to supervisor.

    None but may explain work sequences to others.

    Minimum Qualifications
    High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    – Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bilingual in English and Mandarin
    • Bachelor's degree in health care, social services or social sciences preferred.
    • Experience in frontline/ community services experience with marginalized communities we serve.
    • Strong gender and social equity lens and knowledge and experience with marginalized and stigmatized populations e.g. Indigenous and other racialized communities, homeless communities, migrant and refugee communities, gender and sexual minority populations.
    • Lived experience of relevant affected communities a strong asset. Experience with semi structured or structured interviewing techniques an asset.
    • Community-based research experience or training is an asset.
    • Current CPR, sexual health, and naloxone administration training an asset.
    • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills including conflict management / crisis resolution skills.
    • Organized with meticulous attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently following SOPs, while taking supervision and direction from coordinators, and within a diverse team environment.
    • Flexibility in hours in hours and willingness to work across CGSHE offices and community to support outreach and recruitment.
    • Familiarity with Metro Vancouver for Outreach and community services related to sexual health, HIV and sex work.
    • Knowledge of services for youth an asset.
    • Demonstrated computer skills including experience in Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel and proficiency with data entry.
    • Excellent time management and data entry skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrates professional judgment when supporting participants and referring to appropriate services.
    • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
    • Class 5 BC Driver's License is an asset.
    • Knowledge and skills to work with diverse community collaborators, service providers and other stakeholders.
