EIPS is recruiting a full-time Driver Development and Safety Officer with our Student Transportation department.

Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division, Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

JOB SUMMARY

The Driver Development and Safety Officer is responsible for the delivery, evaluation and continuous improvement of the Driver Training Program to ensure safe, compliant, and effective student transportation services. The role manages the day-to-day operations of the Driver Training School and delivers training and shared safety programming for Students, Staff, Bus Drivers, and Contractors.

The position provides driver training, conducts evaluations and on-road assessments, and coordinates training activities to support Driver development. The role works on quarterly training grant submissions and maintains awareness of legislative and operational requirements that impact training delivery.

The position provides emergent coverage by operating buses as required (e.g. Diver shortages or urgent service needs). The role attends site(s) to support accident, incident and near-miss investigations, and coordinates the delivery of targeted follow-up training for Drivers.

The role impacts student safety, regulatory compliance and service reliability, operating within established policies, procedures, and legislative frameworks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Driver Training and Evaluation

  • Instruct the Class 2-S Driver Training Program and deliver other training and safety programs.
  • Ensure Drivers demonstrate competency in vehicle operation, student management, emergency response, and defensive driving practices.
  • Conduct evaluations and tests for Class 2S and S-Endorsement courses.
  • Adapt training methods to meet diverse adult learning needs while remaining within approved programs and guidelines.
  • Perform on-road driver evaluations for School-Owned Buses and skill assessments for Contract Bus Operator (CBO) Drivers.
  • Maintain accurate certification and evaluation records.

Driving School Operations and Senior Instructor Support

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Driver Training School, including scheduling training activities.
  • Provide guidance to Driving Instructors to support consistent training delivery and evaluation practices.
  • Maintain awareness of legislative and operational requirements that impact training delivery and coordinate with department leadership as needed.
  • Work with the Transportation Safety Team to complete quarterly training grants, providing the information and documentation required for submission.

Safety Programming

  • Plan and deliver shared safety and compliance programming, including bus evacuation practices, Little Elk Island Adventures programming and safety quizzes.
  • Organize and execute bus evacuations, Little Elk Island Programs, and other student transportation safety events as assigned.
  • Develop safety related publications and learning activities for Drivers and Contractors and facilitate participation in feedback process.
  • Support department professional learning and continuous development by contributing content related to safe operations and Driver development.

Incident and Safety Response

  • Attend accident sites as required, to support student transfers and collaborate with law enforcement and other stakeholders during the accident response.
  • Support accident investigations by gathering information, documenting findings, and participating in debrief meetings.
  • Coordinate and deliver follow-up training for Drivers following accidents, incidents and near misses to address identified issues and reinforce safe practices.
  • Conduct safety assessments related to route safety concerns (e.g., stop adjustments, signage improvements) and support implementation of operational changes as appropriate.
  • Receive and review safety-related complaints and support implementation of corrective measures as appropriate.

Operational Coverage and Support

  • Provide emergent operational coverage by operating buses during Driver shortages or other urgent service needs.
  • Support dispatch and student registration during peak periods to maintain service continuity.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Minimum Required:

  • Valid Alberta Class 1 or 2 Driver License with S endorsement
  • Class 2-S Senior Driver Instructor License
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Degree or two-year diploma in a related field.
  • Accident and Collision Investigation Training.

Experience:

Minimum Required:

Three years of transportation, school bus or commercial driving experience.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in driver trainer, mentor, or lead driver role.
  • Five years of related transportation, school bus or commercial driving experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Clean drivers abstract
  • Knowledge of Alberta legislative and regulatory requirements for transporting students, school bus operations, routing, and driver training school policies.
  • Skills in coordinating and delivering training and presentations.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent interruptions and changing requirements.
  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills to resolve concerns and maintain effective stakeholder relationships.
  • Problem solving, decision making, and attention to detail skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, web-based applications, and emerging technology.

Qualifications, Certifications or Designations

  • Certification in Safety Supervision and Special Needs Transportation (NAPT).
  • Emergency First Aid Instructor's Certification
