    Description

My client is an established environmental consultancy that specializes in a range of natural environment services. Their work spans early‑stage assessments, regulatory and permitting support, and ongoing monitoring programs across terrestrial and aquatic environments. The team brings together experienced environmental professionals who combine technical expertise with modern tools and approaches. The organization emphasizes thoughtful, forward‑looking work and is motivated by contributing to responsible project outcomes over the long term.

As part of their ongoing growth and long‑term planning, they are seeking a Wildlife Discipline Lead. This position offers a high degree of flexibility and autonomy and provides meaningful opportunities for both personal and professional development. The role requires a strong technical leader and capable project manager who is motivated to mentor and support a growing team. This is an opportunity to contribute strategically to the evolution of the discipline and to support the organization's continued commitment to high‑quality environmental work.

Remote / WFH / Hybrid: Hybrid or 100% remote (driving distance of Calgary, AB)

    Travel: Minimal, client visits

Salary: $89,500 - $153,200, plus health benefits, annual performance bonus, personal allowance days, RRSP matching, overtime (x1.5)

    Project Delivery and Execution

    • Deliver wildlife projects on time and on budget, with accurate forecasting, disciplined cost control, and clean billing, resulting in minimal write‑offs and strong client satisfaction.
    • Lead projects from planning through field execution to final deliverables, resolving technical, logistical, and resourcing issues without escalation.
    • Ensure field programs are executed safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard when site presence is required.

    Technical Leadership and Judgement

    • Interpret and synthesize field data into defensible wildlife assessments, mitigation strategies, and management recommendations that withstand regulatory and client scrutiny.
    • Produce clear, well‑structured technical reports and regulatory submissions that require minimal senior review and achieve predictable approval outcomes.
    • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients on wildlife‑related risk, compliance, and project strategy.

    People Leadership and Team Development

    • Actively develop intermediate and junior staff by improving their technical competence, communication skills, and commercial awareness.
    • Build a capable, reliable wildlife team by delegating appropriately, setting clear expectations, and providing timely, constructive feedback.
    • Create a culture of accountability, learning, and safety within the discipline.

    Client Relationships and Business Growth

    • Strengthen relationships with existing clients through consistent delivery, responsiveness, and professional judgment, leading to repeat work and expanded scope.
    • Identify and pursue organic and structured business development opportunities aligned with wildlife services.
    • Contribute to proposals, scopes, and budgets that are realistic, competitive, and profitable.

    Autonomy and Professional Discipline

    • Operate independently with minimal oversight, prioritizing competing demands and adapting to shifting timelines.
    • Meet tight deadlines, including occasional work outside standard hours, without compromising quality, safety, or judgment.
    • Uphold and model the organization's core values in all client, regulator, and internal interactions.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor of Science in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
    • Eligible or eligible‑to‑be‑registered Professional Biologist in Alberta and/or British Columbia.
    • Approximately 10+ years of relevant professional experience in wildlife and environmental consulting.
    • Advanced field identification and assessment expertise, with willingness to conduct fieldwork as required.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity, competing priorities, and complex stakeholder environments.
    • Proven track record of maintaining a strong health and safety culture.
    • High personal accountability, strong judgement, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
    • Curiosity and openness to adopting new tools, technologies, and approaches.
