Greenhouse Breeding Leader - Saskatoon, SK


Where the Chemistry Happens:


Accountable to the Greenhouse Program Leader, this position is responsible for the management and execution of Greenhouse Breeding Projects, workflow through the Greenhouse and people management.

Detailed reports, project planning and management of Greenhouse Breeding technicians are crucial in delivering R & D material for further evaluation.

The Greenhouse Breeding Leader will ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.


Formula for Success:

You Will:


  • Coordinate project workflow through greenhouses related to napus or juncea breeding programs including assigning projects, data management and organization files. Ensure data is consistent and available for review.
  • Manage projects to ensure coordination of projects, greenhouse space and projects timelines to ensure delivery of Breeder Seed and project seed for spring and winter nurseries.
  • Manage and execute greenhouse breeding projects ensuring high quality standards and timelines are met with the goal of meeting overall breeding objectives through project management; seed plans and set up, seeding to harvest activities, tracking of projects, data observation and record keeping, sampling, removal of genetically contaminated plants, pollination management, harvesting and delivery of seed.
  • Manage the Breeding and Senior Breeding technicians to ensure projects outlines are followed, folders and data are present and available. Measure and monitor key performance metrics related to both the quality and productivity of the Greenhouse Breeding program.
  • Conduct Performance Target Agreements and Development plans with Breeding and Senior Breeding technicians and keep records of training and ensure development of Breeding and Senior Breeding technicians.
  • Manage and deliver monthly reports that provide details on projects, timelines, plant health and delivery of laboratory reports while ensuring data is consistent and available for review.
  • Perform and coordinate seed logistics activities to ensure accurate movement, tracking, labeling and recordkeeping of seed within the greenhouse ensuring accurate data collection and management which includes preparation of seed to be placed into storage, entry of data into seed inventory computers and tracking of seed within the greenhouse.
  • Liase with breeding and lab functions globally as required to ensure completion of projects.
  • Create and work on all Standard Operating Procedures and authorize all Work Instructions while ensuring they are followed and reviewed yearly.
  • Coordinate and assist in the hiring of Breeding technicians, summer student, contract work and thirdparty labor.
  • Coordinate with DH lad resources as required for meeting project objectives which may include casual staff, inventory, watering and spray schedules, and equipment maintenance through coordination with the Greenhouse Program Leader and Technical Coordinator.
  • Conduct periodic reviews with members of the operations, research and breeding teams to assess success of program.

What We Look for in You:


  • Degree in Plant Science with minimum of 10 years' experience or MSc in Plant Breeding.
  • Experience in managing workflow and project planning and development.
  • Experience in supervising and coordinating third party help.
  • Project management skills.
