The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity.


The Convention has three objectives:

the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the CBD Secretariat, Office of the Executive Secretary (OES).

Under the overall guidance of the Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary, in close consultation with the Government of Japan, the incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the Japan Biodiversity Fund (JBF), including the following main functions:


Responsibilities:

A.

Oversees the management, coordination and implementation of the activities of the Japan Biodiversity Fund (JBF) for the implementation of the Japan Biodiversity Fund for the Implementation of relevant Conference of the Parties (COP) and Conference of the Parties/Meetings of the Parties (COP/MOP) decisions, ensuring that the operations of the JBF are well aligned in support of the overall strategic aims of the Convention and the Secretariat including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

B.

Develops and implements a rolling business plan of the Japan Biodiversity Fund for the implementation of relevant COP and COP/MOP decisions in close consultation with the Government of Japan.

C. Oversees the day-to-day coordination and management of the human and financial resources relating to the Japan Biodiversity Fund.

D.

Liaises with the executing/implementing agencies or program officers within the SCBD designated to undertake capacity building and other relevant activities related to the implementation of the activities of the Japan Biodiversity Fund.

E.

Prepares relevant documents and reports to the Government of Japan on the formulation and implementation status of projects under the Japan Biodiversity Fund on a regular basis.

F.

Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Ensures that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need.

G.

Supports the Executive Secretary in the overall management of the Secretariat and carrying out additional duties that may be required by the Executive Secretary from time to time.
