Description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital is seeking a clinical epileptologist to join a rapidly expanding Ottawa Hospital Adult Epilepsy Program ).

The program includes outpatient clinics in general epilepsy as well as specialized care in the First Seizure Clinic, Women with Epilepsy and a Transitional Clinic for pediatric patients graduating from the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).


The Division of Neurology is renowned for the delivery of outstanding care and is recognized internationally for its programs, including neuromuscular, MS, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy, and stroke.

Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting-edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology.

In addition to modern outpatient clinical units, the Division has a 4 bed EMU, 20 bed inpatient general neurology unit, 15 bed stroke inpatient unit, and consult services at both campuses of The Ottawa Hospital.


The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside).

There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits, and over one million outpatient visits annually.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH's research arm.

It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

OHRI houses over 2,200 researchers, publishing more than 2,000 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations), and places 5th overall in Canada for research funding.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in

external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

Responsibilities


The individual will be expected to engage in all program activities including; 1) evaluation and management of epilepsy patients in inpatient and outpatient settings, including subspecialty clinics, 2) interpret diagnostic standard, ambulatory, ICU and continuous video-EEG monitoring (EMU), 3) perform epilepsy pre-surgical evaluations, 4) participate in outpatient general neurology clinics and on the neurology inpatient and consultation services, 5) educate clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy fellows, 6) precept medical students and neurology residents and 7) actively participate in epilepsy research activities.


The physician will participate in the Neurology on-call rotation on a regular basis and expected to cover the EMU over weekends with resident support as per the on-call schedule.

The incumbent will be expected to participate in a variety of clinical duties as well as education and academic opportunities and initiatives at the University of Ottawa.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
