Department summary

Position summary


Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and protein sub-group leader, the Research Technician will support ongoing biotechnology projects.

The individual will execute and troubleshoot activities following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to colorimetric assay development, protein expression, purification, cell culture maintenance, and daily lab maintenance as required.

This role is entry-level and requires supervision by senior Research Associates and postdoctoral fellows


Duties

  • Under the supervision of senior Research Associates (RAs), assist with cell culture maintenance.
  • Maintain and sterilize the cell culture room.
  • Following aseptic techniques, prepare media, growth plates, and media for cell growth and protein purification as per established SOPs.
  • Following Wishart Lab SOPs and under the guidance of senior RAs, design the expression plasmid, and perform plasmid purification and cloning for subsequent gene expression.
  • Following Wishart Lab SOPs, express, scale up and purify proteins of interest.
  • Prepare new methods and SOPs for the supervisor's approval.
  • Maintain a logbook of scheduled user booking times for various lab instruments.
  • Assist with updating SOPs for basic lab instrument use and maintenance.
  • Operate basic lab equipment (autoclave, shakers, centrifuges, electroporator, pH meter, freezedryer, shaker, sonicator, UV spectrophotometer) for routine lab tasks.
  • Under the direction of PI, participate in the development of enzymatic assays for metabolites detection in biofluids.
  • Participate in weekly group meetings and present results of research work.
  • Perform literature searches and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Use protein structure visualization software.
  • Maintain laboratory supply inventories; use and troubleshoot Barcode Inventory System on the request of the lab manager.
  • Provide research results and data for manuscripts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum BSc in a related field of study (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology)
  • Understanding of aseptic techniques
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cell culture maintenance is an asset
  • Knowledge and experience operating laboratory instruments are an asset
