Description
Purpose:
The Community and Legal Aid Services Program (CLASP) provides legal advice, representation and public legal education for low income and culturally diverse communities.
Education:
Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor Degree and a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, entitled to practice law in Ontario.
Experience:
A minimum of 3 years' experience in the practice of Administrative Law, appearing before related Boards/Tribunals/Ontario Courts, including but not limited to the areas of: Landlord and Tenant, Income Support (EI Appeals and ODSP appeals), Human Rights, Civil Claims (Small Claims Court), Academic Integrity cases, and Judicial Reviews.
Skills:
Familiarity with substantive areas of law relevant to the position sought and with the related courts and tribunals in metropolitan Toronto, as well as the ability to adapt to new procedures and case files related to that area of law.
Commitment to access to justice for low-income individuals/groups and those living with health heath differences is essential.
Ability to analyze legal problems and develop effective and creative options.
Efficient time management.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and written.
Effective advocacy skills.
Efficient organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to new situations, procedures and case files related to that area of law.
Ability use sound judgment, discretion and tact.
Additional Notes:
Normal office environment. Some travel to attend courts and tribunals as required.
Clientele can be individuals who are experiencing housing issues, are currently experiencing a mental health crisis' or other crisis situation.
