Home Visitor, HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters)


Reports To:
HIPPY Coordinator


Position Status:
Part-Time (approximately 20-25 hours per week; parental leave position for 35 weeks, beginning October 2, 2023 to June 30, 2024)


Salary:
$18.91 per hour

The Opportunity


This position will focus on conducting weekly home visits to participating families introducing a parent led preschool structured curriculum and helping newcomer parents to develop the skills they need to guide their children and prepare them start school successfully.

This position will also help organize parent group meetings to increase social inclusion.


Responsibilities

  • Delivering the curriculum with HIPPY participants successfully
  • Making weekly visits (makeup visits, if necessary) to participating families through roleplaying activities
  • Participation in the planning and facilitation of parent group meetings
  • Participation in weekly inservice training and other staff development activities
  • Keeping the HIPPY Coordinator abreast of child/family progress and familial issues and concerns as they arise
  • Timely completion and submission of required reports and other documentation as required by the Coordinator and/or HIPPY program
  • Participation in all sponsored HIPPY activities (i.e., field trips, graduations, etc.)
  • Assist the Coordinator in maintaining an efficient record keeping system of program operations and participating families

Qualifications & Skills

  • Newcomer to Canada (Permanent Resident)
  • A parent of a three, four or fiveyear old child preferred
  • A resident of the targeted community
  • Good (functional) oral and written communication skills, including good reading skills
  • Microsoft Office Skills (i.e. Excel, Word, Publisher, etc.)
  • Strong time management and organization skills
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the settlement process for newcomer families
  • Knowledge of activities, programs and organizations that support families in community
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Experience working in a crosscultural environment
  • Experience with outreach
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information
  • Schedule flexibility to accommodate variations outside of regular business hours, as needed
  • Valid NS Driver's License and reliable vehicle essential
