AST201H1S: Stars and Galaxies


Course Description:

What we know about the properties and life cycles of stars, of galaxies, and of the Universe itself - and how we know it.

How astronomers develop methods for understanding phenomena that span such vast ranges in distance and time. This course is intended for students with no science or engineering background.

Monday 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM; Wednesday 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM.
Course is taught ONLINE SYNCHRONOUS. [Applicants must be in Ontario, and should have proximity to campus for meetings as necessary]

Summer, 'S' term: July 1, 2023-August 31, 2023


Salary:

Rate is for 0.5FCE; if there is a disparity between rates here and the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the rates in the in Collective Agreement shall prevail.


Sessional Lecturer I:
$9,457.90 includes 4% vacation pay

Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term: $9,930.79 includes 4% vacation pay

Sessional Lecturer II:
$10,121.77 includes 6% vacation pay

Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term: $10,326.62 includes 6% vacation pay

III:
$10,362.76 includes 6% vacation pay

Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term: $10,570.02 includes 6% vacation pay


Minimum qualifications:
A PhD in Astronomy or a closely related field.

Recent (within last 5 years) and relevant experience in course topics, not limited to research experience, publications, teaching similar course.

Ability to convey astronomic and astrophysical concepts to non-majors.


Preferred Qualifications:
Previous expertise in teaching a large online synchronous course. Experience managing TAs and online teaching technologies (Quercus, Zoom, Crowdmark)

Description of Duties:

These may include the preparation and delivery of online course content, including lectures; the development and administration of assignments, tests and examinations; the marking and grading of student work and the submission of grades to appropriate University officials in accordance with policy; holding regular office hours; and the supervision of the day-to-day work of any Sessional Instructional Assistants or Teaching Assistants assigned to the course; coordinate with the Teaching Support Administrator and Undergraduate Assistant.
