  • Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, analytical and results driven individual to join our Energy Markets team as an
    Asset & Resource Optimization Analyst based in downtown Toronto.
  • Reporting to the (Asset/Hydro Ops) Optimization Supervisor, the
    Asset & Resource Optimization Analyst will be OPG's goto expert for all things transmission and generation related in the Ontario energy market. Responsibilities will include optimizing the commercial value of OPG's fleet resources in the market through outage optimization, short and longterm fleet generation forecasting to be used for budgeting, business planning and longterm generation planning, and performing strategic analysis in support of negotiations with other market participants, regulators, and policy makers.

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Integrated Outage Planning:
Develop an optimized outage plan considering transmission impacts. Coordinate with IESO and Hydro One and analyze impacts on OPG generation and operations.


Coordination and Negotiation:

Negotiate Hydro One outage revisions and IESO system configurations and advise on outage scheduling based on system conditions such as river flows and power system limits
Analysis and Optimization: Support short and long-term outage optimization and analysis.

Analyze past activities for future outage strategies. Perform after-the-fact analysis of OPG's hydroelectric activities in the Ontario Market.


Strategic Planning:

Develop integrated hydro operational strategies and plans. Coordinate outage scheduling for optimal resource use. Develop outage strategies to mitigate risk to production impacts over all time frames.


Forecasting and Analysis:

Create hydroelectric energy forecasts for the business planning and monthly periods with focus on impacts from outage programs and inflow profiles.

Provide market expertise and analysis strategies to support adhoc requests which may have a commercial impact for OPG.


Reporting and Communication:

Generate reports, maintain stakeholder relationships, and communicate internally and externally to support OPG's operations. Specifically, compiling and reporting on water related Variance Accounts, monthly energy forecast updates, strategic analysis
EDUCATION

  • 4year university degree in Engineering, or a Master's Degree in Business Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6 Years of relevant work experience.

Power System Operations: 3+ years experience, including knowledge of BES and market dynamics.

Hydroelectric Generation: Familiar with operations, pricing, and optimization strategies.

Commercial Experience: Skilled in intelligence gathering, negotiation, and stakeholder interaction in Energy Markets. Requires experience with the operation of the integrated Bulk Electricity System (BES) in addition to fundamental impacts on market price and volatility and a good understanding of physical and financial energy markets;

Technical Proficiency: Proficient in programming and business software, with expertise in modelling and forecasting. Proficient understanding of power system limits and familiarity with the operation of the integrated Bulk Electricity System (BES).


Familiarity with hydroelectric generation, including:
understanding of river and reservoir operations, various pricing and financial mechanisms and strategies for resource optimization;
