The Office of the Children's Lawyer (OCL) is offering exciting, challenging and highly rewarding opportunities in the Victims and Vulnerable Persons division for litigation counsel to work in the Property Rights Department.


Counsel in the Property Rights Department will be expected to provide representation for children on a wide variety of estates and trusts and civil litigation files.

What can I expect to do in this role?: Duties will include:

  • Maintaining carriage of a high volume of complex estates/trusts and civil litigation files in which you will act as counsel to the Children's Lawyer, who represents the interests of minors. This work includes drafting legal documents and attending at motion/mediations/discoveries/appeals.
  • Supervising agent lawyers across Ontario.
  • Providing strategic advice to the Children's Lawyer on estates/trusts and civil litigation files and on policy matters involving the Children's Lawyer
  • Presenting at legal education forums, and other engagements on the property rights of minors.
  • Liaising with legal representatives, Crown Attorneys, the Judiciary, Children's Aid Societies, community and legal organizations.
  • Presenting at workshops, seminars and public speaking engagements.

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Technical Legal Knowledge:


  • Demonstrated experience in estates and trusts, and civil litigation
  • Appearances before different levels of court including the Superior Court of Justice.
  • Thorough knowledge of related legislation such as Trustee Act, Succession Law Reform Act, Estates Act, Children's Law Reform Act, Insurance Act, Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Knowledge of estate administration and estate accounting.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:


  • Ability and skill in interviewing and communicating effectively with children and youth.
  • Demonstrated administrative, instructional and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated advocacy and negotiation skills.

General Knowledge and Leadership Ability:


  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a significant number of lawyers carrying a high volume of cases.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated legal research skills.
  • Proven judgment, analytical and problemsolving ability.
  • Technical and computer skills to work effectively with computer technology and databases made available to professional staff.
