Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Dean of Science, the Animal Care Facility Manager and Animal Care Committee will:

  • Provide technical and support services to the university
  • primarily to the Faculty of Science
  • regarding all aspects of animal care.
  • Maintain animals housed in the Science building (e.g., feeding animals, cleaning, environmental control and health support of the animals).
  • Provides technical assistance and feedback to principal investors who use the animal care facility.
  • Manage records for care, inventories, and training in animal related areas.
  • Be the designated Facility manager for the Aquatic Facility.
  • Be required to work evenings and weekends.
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President Research, the Animal Care Committee Coordinator will:

  • Be the main point of contact and communications hub among the Chair of the ACC, the Consulting Veterinarian, Animal Care Users (i.e., researchers using animals in their research) and the SMU ACC.
  • With reference to the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) Terms of reference for Animal Care Committees, this position supports the ACC by ensuing that the animal use protocols are well managed.
  • Ensure ACC minutes and reports are promptly produced and distributed.
  • Ensure all exchanges between the ACC and animal users are well documented and filed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure animal users and ACC members are provided with necessary information.

Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Animal Care Facility Manager and Animal Care Committee Coordinator you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related science.
  • A master's degree that encompasses research would be an asset.
  • Minimum two (2) years related experience.
  • Eligibility for certification as Registered laboratory Animal Technician.
  • Experience in conducting research involving animals.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to function independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Products.
