Reporting to the Registrar, the Director of Learner Support Services is responsible for the direction, strategic planning and operations of all learner support services.

The Director will oversee information related to wellness; remain current, interpret and advise on related existing or new legislation; as well as keep abreast of developments in the education sectors and the greater public sector.

The Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Learner Support Services Unit, which provides academic, accommodation, accessibility, personal health and wellness and financial support services to learners in all NOSM University programs and will act as the main point of contact with external services providers, as necessary.


The Director, Learner Support Services will actively facilitate an inclusive campus environment and support an organizational culture that supports academic and personal success for learners, staff and faculty.


Responsibilities:

Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leads and manages learner wellness including financial wellness, medical, mental health and case management across NOSM University.
  • Responsible for working collaboratively with external providers to ensure that procedures and services relating to learner support services including counseling, health services, accommodations, financial aid and other services are available and easily accessed by learners.
  • Accountable for the development, administration and evaluation of the financial aid program and processes ensuring integrity of the program and accountability to learners including the award process and determination of need.
  • Responsible for working collaboratively with existing committees and frameworks to make contributions to the academic and administrative developments of NOSM University in collaboration with all NOSM University portfolios on wellness and the culture of respect.
  • Responsible for working collaboratively with academic portfolios, key stakeholders and existing committees to ensure that NOSM University programs and activities are sensitive and responsive to the needs of learners and residents.
  • Directs and supervises the Unit staff; manages and maintains daytoday activities and events; and provides longerterm strategic direction for the Learner Support Services Unit.+
  • Oversees, in collaboration with Learner Affairs Officers and other staff, the development of policies and procedures to ensure seamless delivery of health and wellness services and resources to all NOSM University
  • Working within established structures and with key stakeholders, responsible for ensuring ongoing quality assurance and compliance with accreditation requirements that are directly within Learner Support Services purview, Career Advising, Learner Mistreatment Process and Policy, Accommodation Process and Policy.
  • Collaborates with the Vice-President, Clinical Partnerships and Hospital Relations, Human Resources and Faculty Affairs in vetting and investigating Learner Mistreatment Reporting.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all AODA policies, practices and programs are documented, administered, implemented and reported in compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Assists in the development of a Circle of Care model to wrap support services around learners.
  • Oversees, in collaboration with Learner Affairs Officers and other staff, the development of strategies and communication plans and promotes services relating to health, wellbeing and resilience throughout the University including mentorship, coaching, and leadership development programs in collaboration with all portfolios
  • Works with key stakeholders to build and maintain a leadership network that will offer noncurriculum learning opportunities relating to wellness.
  • Liaises with stakeholders to extend support and mobilize resources for all learners in distributed learning sites and academic health sciences centres.
  • Accountable for modern, effective, creative and affordable wellness programs, frameworks, policies and initiatives.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Equity and Diversity, acts as a resource for learners, faculty and staff concerning the nonacademic aspects of equity, diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Oversees, in collaboration with Learner Affairs Officers and other staff, the implementation of communication strategies to enhance the perception and understanding of services to learners, faculty and staff.
  • Works with the Communications Unit in the development of promotional materials.
  • Develops strong, functional working relationships with academic programs and clinical training site leadership to understand the medical and allied health clinical and academic training requirements, responsibilities, and environment.
  • Serves as a key advisor to NOSM University's Executive Group to ensure compliance with legal requirements of AODA goals, objectives, timeframes, and measures of progress.
