The staff members of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) are committed to the provision of high quality services to Albertans.

Activities performed enable the Office to certify the cause and manner of death in accordance with the Fatalities Inquiries Act; provide forensic service, assist in educating Albertans in time of grief; and develop and maintain a center of excellence in forensic pathology and toxicology.

Role Responsibilities:

As part of the toxicology laboratory that provides testing results to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Quality Assurance Supervisor and Laboratory Scientist ensures the quality standards of the OCME toxicology laboratory laboratory are met through:

  • the maintenance of laboratory technology and equipment; and
- the effective guidance and day to day supervision of nine (9) toxicology staff in accordance with Government of Alberta established principles and procedures.


Qualifications:


Requirements:


  • Ph.
D. in chemistry, analytical toxicology, toxicology, or clinical chemistry.

  • 5 years progressively responsible related experience in analytical chemistry; or equivalent as described below.
  • Firsthand experience of analyzing drugs or related compounds in biological specimens using LC-MS/MS, LC-QTOF (or TOF) and GC-MS/MS techniques.
  • Experience with, or a demonstrated understanding of, the software and operating systems of the laboratory's analytical equipment, such as Agilent MassHunter and OpenLab.
  • Experience maintaining analytical toxicology instrumentation, and knowledgeably engaging in advanced troubleshooting issues with equipment service engineers.
  • Experience with successful leadership or management of a team of people.

Equivalency:


  • Masters Degree, plus 7 years related experience; or
  • University graduation in a related field, plus 9 years related experience.

Assets:


  • Skilled in conducting advanced toxicology analyses of postmortem specimens.
  • Toxicology knowledge, including casework interpretation skills and experience.

Hours of work:
Monday - Friday, 8:15 am - 4:30 pm (36.25/week)
