Position Summary

Reporting to the Division Manager, the Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates and supporting the tendering process for mechanical industrial construction projects.

The role involves analyzing drawings and specifications, preparing quantity take-offs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor quotations, advising on tender strategy, and establishing cost monitoring systems throughout the project lifecycle.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Division Manager, the Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates and supporting the tendering process for mechanical industrial construction projects.

The role involves analyzing drawings and specifications, preparing quantity take-offs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor quotations, advising on tender strategy, and establishing cost monitoring systems throughout the project lifecycle

Key Responsibilities

Prepare detailed pre-bid cost estimates of labour, mechanical materials, equipment, and subcontracted services based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications
Perform quantity take-offs and develop comprehensive cost breakdown structures
Obtain, review, and analyze supplier and subcontractor quotations
Advise management on tendering procedures, and provide recommendations on bid strategy, and subcontractor selection
Participate in bid closing and submission processes
Prepare and maintain detailed work breakdown documentation including planned costs, schedules, equipment requirements, materials, special tools, subcontracted services, and supporting contract documentation (drawings and specifications)
Interface the baseline project schedule with the work breakdown structure and resource-load estimated labor and budget hours
Establish, monitor, and report on production cost targets, work plans, schedules, and performance benchmarks
Analyze productivity, trends, and forecasts against estimates and provide recommendations to project site teams
Track productivity data and trends to provide structured feedback to estimating teams to support continuous improvement and future tenders
Develop and maintain equipment control logs for required components based on estimates, project specifications, and P&IDs
Review and maintain project constraint logs to ensure materials, documentation, and approvals align with required schedule timelines
Proactively communicate with Project and Trade Superintendents when required dates or milestones are not being met
Ensure work breakdown and cost-control documentation clearly demonstrates compliance with applicable company policies, procedures, codes, and specifications
Maintain accurate and complete project documentation within project management and estimating systems
Act as a liaison between estimating and operations to ensure estimates contain sufficient detail and supporting information to clearly communicate project scope to site teams
Act as the initial point of contact for the purchasing department when setting up contracts with vendors and subcontractors
Review vendor and subcontractor contracts to ensure alignment with estimated scope, quantities, and cost assumptions
Work with trade superintendents to ensure cost codes and work breakdown structures accurately reflect expected work activities and productivity rates
Ensure deviations from estimates are properly documented and communicated to project and operations management
Review contract documents, drawings, and specifications to identify scope requirements, potential risks, and opportunities
Identify technical and scope-related requirements within contract documents and liaise with engineering and site teams as required
Generate Requests for Information (RFIs) when drawings or specifications are unclear and provide feedback to estimating teams to address recurring issues during the tender process
Assist in the development of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) for use by site teams
Support the development of maintenance-related cost planning and controls at project start-up
Maintain, improve, and optimize work breakdown plans, estimating strategies, and cost-control procedures using continuous improvement techniques
Utilize feedback loops and lessons learned to improve systems for efficiency, optimization, and cost reduction
May involve occasional travel, 90% office, 10% field.

Requirements

Completion of secondary school
Completion of a three-year college program in mechanical, civil or construction engineering technology or related discipline, or several years as a qualified mechanical tradesperson, or equivalent combination of education and progressive estimating experience
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel for estimating, cost tracking, and productivity analysis
Experience with construction estimating and project management software is considered an asset, including Procore, Jonas, Primavera P6, Bluebeam, Accubid Anywhere, Microsoft Access, and Power BI
Strong analytical, organizational and time-management skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
Strong analytical skills with proven ability to research, summarize information, and make cost- and productivity-based recommendations
Highly collaborative and able to work effectively in a team-based environment
Thorough understanding of construction project documents, scope, and estimates, with the ability to identify and document potential risks or opportunities
Working knowledge of company Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures as they relate to construction estimating and project controls
