Description

BGC Jane and Finch Club serves over 2,500 children and youth in the Jane and Finch and surrounding communities providing social, physical, educational, creative, seasonal, and community support programs.

Your role as an After School Mentor will be to provide a safe and supportive environment for the program participants.

This program is designed for children 5-12 years of age. Program components include education, recreation, social activities, sports, health and nutrition, mentoring and the arts.


General Job Description


We are currently seeking a dedicated child mentor staff who will serve as a positive role model to support, lead and encourage children aged 5-12.

You will have a chance to form lasting relationships, encourage positive behavior, and design activities to promote the overall welfare of participants, all while increasing your knowledge of social work, behavioral studies, and management skills.

BGC Jane and Finch Club runs after school programming at 7 schools within the region.

Employee Duties & Responsibilities

  • Report to Children's Coordinator and/or Director
  • Implements the daytoday delivery of the BGC Jane and Finch program following all requirements of BGC core values: belonging, respect, encouragement & support, working together, and speaking out
  • Ensure the confidentiality of the staff and BGC members as employees
  • Maintain positive communication and relationships with BGC Jane and Finch Club official partners and community group partners, including but not limited to: Toronto Community Housing, Toronto School Board, Toronto Neighborhood Community Officers, local school administrators and staff
  • Abide by any and all Covid or health related regulations implemented by St. Albans Boys and Girls Club
  • Participation in routine and/or annual employee assessments

Child Mentor Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement and develop Program Plans for BGC Jane and Finch Club after school programming in education, recreation, social activities, sports, health and nutrition, mentoring and the arts.
  • Oversee daily operations of recreation areas including: maintaining supervision of BGC children for the duration of programming, maintaining safety equipment, clearing facilities, displaying appropriate signage, and operating a computer as necessary
  • Support BGC staff to improve academic engagement, developing positive relationships, and recognizing students for their efforts where possible through active feedback
  • Attend trips on behalf of BGC Jane and Finch Club with members and applicable partner groups
  • Encourage members to participate in activities and form healthy relationships by greeting and introducing new members, encouraging group activities, and providing oversight to ensure everyone is treated equitably
  • Foster collaboration and leadership among members by adding activities that promote teamwork and encouraging participants to actively pursue responsibility
  • Assist in the routine cleaning schedule of the BGC Jane and Finch Club site you are located in
  • Attending, where applicable, routine staff meetings and checkins
  • Use the provided technology to document, monitor, and report on member attendance and progress as requested

Qualifications
**_

Required:
_**- High school diploma

  • Experience working with children and/or youth
  • HIGH FIVE Certificate
  • Valid First Aid and CPR
  • C certification
  • Police Background Check (to be completed upon hiring)
  • Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment.
  • Strong supervision and program planning skills

  • College degree
  • Strong skills in one or more of the following areas; sports, arts, recreation, education, health and nutrition.
  • Must be available to work Monday
  • Friday between 2:45PM 6:00PM (hours may vary depending on program location)
