Main Purpose and Function


The Traffic Painter I - Traffic Technician will work directly with the Senior Traffic Technician and is responsible for installing, monitoring, basic repair, and managing the inventory of the branch's fleet of temporary traffic count devices and permanent bike counting devices.

The Traffic Painter I will also plan and prioritize work received from the Supervisor or requestor, prepare various traffic records and perform quality control checks of the data.

Field and office work in the collection of traffic data from City roads, sidewalks and bikeways. The hours of work will be based on a 7.5 hour work day Monday through Friday. This position will also be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install count equipment (lift and carry up to 40 lbs) in the field. Including paths, roads, and sidewalks.
  • Conduct basic maintenance of count equipment.
  • Keep accurate work records and track ongoing work queue.
  • Drive work van throughout the City to get to work locations.
  • Use count device software to prepare data.
  • Conduct field investigations, make observations, data entry and basic data analysis.
  • Compile a variety of data and records pertaining to traffic control systems.
  • Install simple traffic control in the field including traffic lane closures.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10, preferably with some related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the collection of traffic data.
  • Some knowledge of departmental standards governing the collection of traffic data.
  • Skills in the use of tools related to work including power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to recognize the hazards involved in working amidst traffic and take necessary precautionary measures.
  • Ability to maintain simple records related to the work.
  • Ability to make elementary arithmetic calculations and prepare simple sketches.
  • Ability to work independently and with others to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work outside in inclement weather.
  • Ability to drive a work van or light service truck when required.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull heavy objects.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public.

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or higher and a safe driving record are required.
  • The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.
  • To be considered for the position, applicants must attach copies of their Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) and Insurance & Claims history record for the past 5 years for review. Documents must be from within 14 days of posting closing date.
