About OPIRG:

The Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) McMaster is seeking a part-time Office Coordinator. OPIRG


McMaster is a student-funded, student-directed, non-profit organization dedicated to research and action in the areas of social justice and the environment.

Working with partners in the McMaster and Hamilton communities, OPIRG McMaster aims to encourage the development of students' research and advocacy skills and to make diverse viewpoints available.

Employment Terms:

This is a permanent part-time position commencing Monday, June 26, 2023 for 24 hours per week at a rate of $26.51 per hour, with annual cost of living adjustments, extended health care benefits and four weeks paid vacation per year.

The position entails occasional evening and weekend work.

OPIRG McMaster employees are unionized with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1281 and work within terms outlined by a Collective Agreement.

There is an initial 6-month probationary period.


Office Coordinator Position:

The Office Coordinator will primarily act as OPIRG McMaster's bookkeeper and Corporate Secretary and reports to the OPIRG McMaster Board of Directors.

Working as part of a team, the Office Coordinator will be responsible on a daily basis for ensuring the smooth operation of the office, perform administrative functions, and provide administrative support to the OPIRG McMaster Board Members.


Key Responsibilities:

Financial Administration:Responsible for banking, payables, receivables, payroll, day-to-day budget administration (using QuickBooks software), budget reports, annual budget setting, audit preparation, and grant administration. Administer funds for Public Interest Projects. Maintain the historical financial records. Maintain the Community Membership database.

Programming:Support and lead OPIRG event planning and implementation as requested by the board (e.g., Making Connections Week, Open House, AGM, Fair Trade Fest, Skills Training series). Assist in advertising of events.

Board of Directors: Attend Board meetings and assist the volunteer Board of Directors in fulfilling their corporate responsibilities (i.e. submitting of Incorporation documents on a yearly basis following the AGM; assisting with Board Nominations and planning the Annual General Meeting; maintenance of board meeting minutes and agenda; compliance with constitution, the collective agreement, and policies). Arrange Board training sessions in consensus decision making, anti-oppression, financial literacy and board rights and responsibilities. Participate in strategic planning and organizational decision-making processes. Update the Board Information Package on a regular basis.

Provincial OPIRG Network:Attend Provincial PIRG AGM and Provincial PIRG staff meetings; participate in the provincial network activities and collectives.

Networking:Maintain and nurture the numerous relationships OPIRG McMaster has developed with campus and community organizations.

Resource Centre:Oversee various facets of the resource library such as the organization and cataloguing of resource materials; the purchase of new acquisitions throughout the year; and the training and management of student volunteers responsible for the resource centre.


Qualifications:


  • Bookkeeping skills;
  • Experience working with students and/or volunteers and superior interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Knowledge of, and experience with social and environmental justice issues and nonprofit, charitable organizations, as well as antioppression principles;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a consensusbased environment and navigate nonhierarchical spaces;
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated understanding of community development, group process and facilitation principles;
  • Exemplary organizational, office administrative and time management skills, as OPIRG functions according to the academic schedule, necessitating operating on strict timelines;
