    Description

    The Food Bank Coordinator oversees all aspects of the food bank's operations, including acquisition, distribution, volunteer coordination, community outreach, and facility maintenance. This role requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the food bank.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate food donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations, leveraging relationships within the community to secure donations, similar to ensuring coordination of food service operations in the Food Services Coordinator role.
  • Oversee distribution of food to individuals and families in need, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and proper handling procedures, reflecting the responsibility for managing food distribution in compliance with food safety regulations.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, offering guidance and support to ensure smooth operation and service delivery.
  • Represent the organization at community events, offering guidance and support to facilitate seamless operation, raising awareness, and gathering support for the organization's mission and initiatives, similar to maintaining positive community relations.
  • Ensure cleanliness of all work areas, including designated areas for food distribution and facility facilities, adhering to established sanitation protocols, consistent with responsibilities for maintaining high standards of sanitation and cleanliness.
  • Enter data into Link2Feed to maintain accurate records for donations and distribution
  • Weekly Tasks:

  • Schedule volunteer shifts effectively to meet operational needs and ensure adequate coverage during distribution hours, similar to preparing and sequencing the timing of food and preparation of tasks.
  • Clean and maintain work areas, including the office, storage areas, distribution area, waiting area, and washrooms, reflecting responsibilities for maintaining cleanliness of equipment and workspaces.
  • Take inventory of food stock and supplies, and order food as needed to maintain adequate stock levels, similar to responsibilities for ordering, receiving, and monitoring food and kitchen supplies.
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports on donations, distributions, and volunteer hours to track progress and identify areas for improvement, similar to assisting with recording monthly and quarterly statistics.
  • Monthly Tasks:

  • Establish relationships with local grocery stores, farms, and food manufacturers to secure ongoing support and donations, reflecting responsibilities for ensuring the security of food supplies and establishing guidelines for acquisition.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to address food insecurity and implement community outreach activities, paralleling responsibilities for maintaining good relations with suppliers, donors, and other community agencies.
  • Conduct outreach activities to raise awareness and support for the organization's mission, such as participating in events like the Hunger Count in March. These efforts are similar to conducting outreach activities aimed at raising awareness and garnering support for our mission.
  • Review and update inventory management systems.
  • Seasonal Tasks:

  • Organize holiday food drives and plan special events or fundraisers during key seasons to engage the community and support fundraising efforts, reflecting responsibilities for organizing and executing special events or fundraisers.
  • Conduct seasonal reviews of operations and make necessary adjustments to meet changing needs and address emerging challenges effectively, similar to reviewing and updating inventory management systems regularly.
  • HOURS: 30 hrs/week

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of high school, grade 12, or equivalent plus post-secondary education in Food Services or specialized Food Service courses. (Note: an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable)
  • Food Safe certification
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification
  • Other training as required by contract or The Salvation Army
  • Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of prior related experience, including one year of experience in areas of supervision and budgeting.
  • Previous experience in food distribution, or community organizing preferred.
  • PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management software.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Salvation Army and the Food Bank, with a passion for addressing food insecurity and hunger in the community
  • Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training or Little Warriors Prevent It Training and required Health and Safety training.
