Welding QC Coordinator - 18 month Limited Term:

The primary responsibility of the Welding Quality Control Coordinator - 18 Month Limited Term position is to represent Seaspan Victoria Shipyards interest related to specifications, welding code, standard or section compliance and the required process controls.

This role provides Quality Control support to all vessel repair activities including Naval vessel's surface and submarines, coast guards, BC ferries and commercial operators.

The incumbent works with all VSL collaborators as required for effective oversight of the in-process controls.


Note:
Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Victoria Shipyards.


What you'll do

  • The Welding Quality Control Coordinator will be responsible for the execution and oversight of Company Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and Quality Management System compliance, sign offs at specified quality control process examinations, traveller and ITP hold points.
  • This role works with all VISSC departments to ensure that all standard operating procedures reflect the methods and techniques currently in use and that the resulting workmanship from these procedures meets customer and Seaspan's quality expectations. This position works with all levels of employees and managers within the VISSC program, ensuring that quality standards are being met. Complexity of the role comes from meeting regulatory requirements and also meeting customer's needs in a timely and prudent manner while maintaining all quality objective evidence required for quality control and future audits. Errors may go undetected for a period time until outside inspections and/or audits, and could have serious impacts of production, meeting targets, budgets and could impact relationships with the customer and various collaborators.
Communications

Internal

  • The Welding Quality Control Coordinator communicates with all levels, from senior shipyard management to shop floor personnel to discuss issues pertaining to quality requirements. The incumbent must have the ability to communicate instructions and influence production employees on welding procedures that meet industry standards and regulatory bodies.
External

  • The incumbent works closely with Babcock Canada, the Canadian Bureau Welding Engineer and government representatives to explain interpretations of industry standards and regulatory bodies on quality requirements, issues and procedures. Tact and diplomacy are required when dealing with the customer and collaborators, however; the welding quality control coordinator will have to use their expertise and influence to meet conformance and maintain the VISSC quality management system.

  • NDE reports
  • Acceptance for completion of work packages related to welding.
  • Relevant material types, related standards and product forms.
  • Basic alloy systems and metallurgy, welding preheat, interpass controls and heat treatments.
  • Hydrostatic / and pneumatic testing methods, safety and best practices
  • Non-Destructive testing techniques (MPI, LPI, UT, RT)
  • Position Specifications
  • Current valid CWB CSA W178.2 level 2 Welding Inspector certification (or international equivalent).
  • Interprovincial Red Seal is preferred
  • Minimum 6 years documented experience working at a position with full responsibility for all weldingrelated quality control functions, including supervision of welding insection staff.
