Westcoast Cylinders Inc. is a family-owned and operated business located in New Westminster BC that has been serving North American industrial needs for over 50 years. We manufacture the Royal line of tie rod hydraulic and air cylinders and accessories that are used around the world in the wood products, mining, oil and gas, and marine industries. Our products are known for their robust design, reliability, superior operational performance, and ease of repair.
The Design Engineer will primarily focus on new product design and more customized cylinder engineered solutions for customers of Westcoast Cylinders. Working closely with the production group, the engineer will create detailed drawings, bills of materials and manufacturing specification for new and existing products plus new product development requirements. Specific duties are:
- Establishes design criteria and produce manufacturing drawings, specifications, and bills of materials of our actuator product lines in compliance with drafting standards (ASME Y14.100)
- Provides engineering specifications and support for sales quotations, shop floor process development and new product development.
- Manages engineering projects for new products or manufacturing processes as required.
- Works with suppliers to ensure the quality and usability of raw materials, component parts, and sub-assemblies used in the production of our products.
- Optimizes and manages engineering information flow, design standards, design revisions and CAD best practices.
- Follows Engineering Change principles and process as required to successfully reduce product cost, resolve design problems, or make product improvements.
- Performs stress calculations and establish design limits as required.
- Takes field measurements and document customer requirements for new projects, new product development, custom product configurations and failure analysis.
- Maintains standard cylinder designs for all product lines.
- Participates in the development and implementation of process improvements.
- Conducts other related tasks and projects as required.
Qualifications:
- Education: BSc in Mechanical Engineering or Diploma of Mechanical Technology.
- Experience: 1 to 5 years designing components and assemblies in a CNC milling and turning manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of DFM/DFMA processes.
- Knowledge of material characteristics and selection.
- Advanced capability and knowledge of SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of ERP factory systems is an asset.
- Experience in engineering project management
- In-depth knowledge of ASME Y14.100 and GD&T standards.
- Familiarity with PDM or PLM systems is an asset.
- Proven record of problem solving and innovative design.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good written and spoken English language communication skills.
