Location - This role requires work in multiple locations: North and South Campus Edmonton, and field locations in St. Albert, Spruce Grove, and Leduc.


Duties would require flexibility to work occasionally beyond normal working hours on weekdays, and on weekends, as and when required, during the crop season.

Working for the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science


The Department of AFNS attracts over $20 million in research funding every year, which supports research and teaching on North and South Campus in plant, animal, food processing and bio-resource, human nutrition, agri-food materials, genomics and proteomics and food microbiology.

Furthermore, we manage extensive research infrastructure at the Edmonton Research Station, Roy Berg Kinsella Research Ranch, Mattheis Research Ranch, and St.

Albert Research Station.


Position Summary


The Field Technician conducts field trials with canola breeding and research materials at 3-4 sites; trial plans are prepared by Canola Breeder.

The technician's responsibilities include trial seed set-up, seed treatment with chemicals, land preparation, field plot layout, seeding in field plots, plot management, note-taking, and harvesting the field plots.

The technician will also assist graduate students in their field experiments.


In winter and during any less busy time in the field season, seed increase in the greenhouse; this includes seeding and harvesting of the plants.


Duties

Field trials:

  • Organize and perform analysis of the yield and other data collected from the field trials using a computer. The summarized data will be used by Canola Breeder for selection of materials and germplasm development.
  • Assists graduate students in their field experimentations.
  • Communication with industry partner/collaborator regarding field trials (e.g. exchange trials).
  • Duties would require flexibility to work occasionally beyond normal working hours on weekdays, and on weekends, as and when required, during the crop season.
  • Responsible for maintaining seed inventory at the research station. All breeding and research seed materials need to be maintained in an orderly fashion for easy access by the Canola Breeding program personnel. Materials that are no longer needed will be discarded in consultation with the Canola Breeder.

Greenhouse:

  • In winter as well as during less busy time in summer, seed increase of the canola breeding and research materials in greenhouse for generation advance. This includes seeding and harvesting of the plants, and seed preparation for seeding in field or in greenhouse.
  • Responsible for maintaining the machineries used for field plot trials in proper working condition and getting any repairs done (or sending the machinery for repairs) as and when necessary.
  • Help in canola seed quality analysis in laboratory during winter months.
Safety and Supervision

  • The field technician will supervise 13 summer students and 12 casual employees in field operations.
  • The field technician is responsible for the safe operation of the field trial and other equipment, as well as providing training to the summer and graduate students, whenever they will be operating the equipment.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. in Agriculture or Plant Science.
  • A minimum of two to three years experience in conducting field trial research is required.
  • Drivers licenses will be required for this position to drive/operate any of the trucks, tractors
