Position:
Safety and Health Advisor

Position Overview

This full-time position is responsible for providing expert safety and health knowledge, advice, training, and support to healthcare organizations for the Manitoba Association for Safety in Healthcare Inc.

(MASH). This includes development and delivery of strategies to improve service levels and improving efficiencies throughout Manitoba's public healthcare system.


The Safety and Health Advisor is responsible for the establishment and evaluation of the goals and objectives for services that align with the elements and sub elements of the Manitoba healthcare safety management system.

This position is responsible for ensuring all program initiatives, including existing and new safety and health training programs, comply with all MASH policies, corporate identity, and all related legislation.

This Safety and Health Advisor is responsible to support Manitoba healthcare employers in the implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement in safety management system practices.

A key expectation of this position is to build and nurture relationships with the health care industry. This position has safety associates as direct reports.

This position reports to the director of safety programs and participates as an active member of the
MASH team.

Education and Skills

  • Occupational Health & Safety education, with 35 years of safety and health working experience, with demonstrated skills and abilities to advise, train and support healthcare organizations across
Manitoba.

  • Professional safety designation such as CRSP, CHSC (achieved or pursuing).
  • Thorough working knowledge of Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health legislation, The
Manitoba Employment Standards Act, and other related legislation.

  • Considerable knowledge of Safety Management Systems, safety education and training resources.
  • Ability to conduct audits and assessments based on Safe Work Certification standards.
  • Knowledge of Provincial Emergency Management.
  • Working knowledge of Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention (MSIP).
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.
  • Adult education certificate, SAFE Work endorsed trainer certificate, SAFE Work auditor certification, knowledge of CSA Psychological Safety and Health standard, and / or previous experience in healthcare environments will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities:


  • Advise and support Manitoba's healthcare organizations with safety and health related matters.
  • Conduct meetings with healthcare organization's safety personnel to discuss safety issues and recommendations.
  • Provide guidance and knowledge within the MASH team on safety and health items, including monitoring for changes to standards and legislation.
  • Provide guidance and support to member organizations pursuing MASH certification.
  • Act as a resource to healthcare organizations on safety and health matters.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and store data on injury and illness trends in the healthcare industry.
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews on MASH certification audits.
  • Audit organizations pursuing or maintaining MASH certification.
  • Deliver safety and health training online, or inperson in Winnipeg and across Manitoba.
  • Creation of new training content and review and revision of current training content.
  • Research and development of additional safety and health resources to assist Manitoba healthcare organizations to improve their safety and health programs and reduce workplace injuries.
  • Assist the director of safety programs and/or executive director with other duties as assigned.
  • Effective strategic thinking, decision making, planning and problemsolving skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships and partnerships with MASH members, stakeholders, and other external organizations.
Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires travel within the province with the possibility of overnight stays.
  • Valid Class 5 vehicle driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Able to deliver inperson training for a full day, including being on your feet for eight hours.
About MASH
The Manitoba Association for Safety in Healthcare Inc. (MASH) is Manitoba's new healthcare specific industry-based safety program (IBSP) and certifying partner for healthcare organizations.

Its main purpose is to educate employers and improve the safety and health of workers in Manitoba workplaces that are part of the healthcare industry.

MASH will provide relevant, customized services that respond to the diverse needs, hazards and risks specific to healthcare with an in-depth understanding and targeted strategies to support safe, productive workplaces.
